How good is Sebastien Vettel? **Spoilers**

Seb is the best out there. Just look at Webber to compare. Anyhow, what i feel is pretty questionable, is his overtaking skills and his wet driving skills. No doub† he won at Monza back in 2008 in wet conditions, IIRC, that was his last, and only win in the wet.

 

I'm sorry for asking it; really. Stopped watching F1 and just started back last year.

But why does some of the people here want Vettel to change to Ferrari.

Also, they said that RB car is the best around due to their EBD. Can anyone explains to me in details? Google explanations are quite complicated.

 

A diffusor creates downforce - a force that presses the car down on the road. The more downforce you have, the better the tires stick to the ground and more the car can accellerate, i.e. gain speed or take corners.

Now imagine looking at a driving car from the side. Due to its velocity, air is flowing above it and underneath it. If the air under the car had a lower pressure than the air above the car, the pressure difference would lead to our desired force that pushes the car down.

How can we create such a lower pressure? Imagine blowing into a kitchen funnel at its small side. You'd have a high pressure directly at the small side, where you blow in, but the diameter of the funnel increases, and so the pressure drops. A diffusor is much like such a funnel, it has a small cross section at its inlet and a big one at its outlet. It is built in the underside of the car.

Now the trick is that the more air flows through the diffusor, the lower the pressure and thus the bigger the downforce is. This is why the F1 teams try to blow their exhaust gasses through the diffusor, and the Red Bull has a very efficient way of doing so.

That explanation is simplified quite a lot, but I hope it helps you understand

 

Impossible to say for sure but fun to debate.
At the end of the day Seb is leading the WDC by a huge margin and that alone makes him the best.

Hard to say. MS was best when it came to strategies, developing and setting up the car as well as a rain master.

Today, Seb more less, have to just manage his tyre wear. Having said that, who knows what Jenson can do too, in that Bull. Or MS

 

I can't because:

He isn't exactly blowing Nico Rosberg into the weeds right now.

So it's a problem, do we rate Nico high, or not.

I think that you're selling the boy a bit short. While Mike was unexcelled, on and off the track, in so many facets of the race game there's a bit more than tire management These days.

For the sake of debate, my 02c;

- Put Fred, Lewis, Jenson, Michael or Nico (!) in the RB7 and watch them win.

I'm starting to suspect both Merc jockeys are flattering that car. Further, I'm gaining more and more respect for the Young Lad - He does tend to go backwards in the race (something Michael very rarely allows ) but *may* just be very, very good in a decent car.....

I can't argue with that, I just cannot figure out whether Nico is doing really well and his stock value has risen, or MS is well past his best and knows it, and that somewhat negates Nico's apparent rise.

Its all guess work, like Dave said all good for debate...

 

The million $ question, huh?......

Given that Norbert & Ross just made him the highest paid non-WDC in the field, I'm going with the former. They're pretty acknowledged "experts" when it comes to judging talent and have the benefit of both sets of data - If Michael was a washed up pensioner (!) they'd know it, and if Nico was just "average" I don't think he'd have got the big bucks.

Put either of 'em in the RB7 and they'd be doing a Seb IMO.

[Dons flamesuit here] - I also reckon Phil would be there or thereabouts!..... The little guy has *always* been #2 yet has sometimes been very, very, quick. Given a #1 drive in a #1 car, I suspect he may still be able to deliver......

You guys are funny sometimes.

In tennis and golf and you, at least statistically, legitimately call someone the number one in the sport.

I've only been watching F1 for 20 years, and read what I can be bothered with, and experienced some track time and some useful lessons at the craft, but seriously, we have NO way of really knowing who's the best out there! Too many variables. Maybe it's Bruno!

It's all very nice to say, for example, that MS is the best ever because he's achieved what he's achieved, but there's no doubt that if the team back then was the screw up they are now, he wouldn't have those numbers, but that wouldn't make him any less of a driver.

As long as it's a team sport and as long as the cars and strategies are different, even in the one team, there's no way we'll ever know or, really, no way we can even guess.

It's just hot air.

 

Your right, but that then ends the conjecture in the general debate.

The only facts that we can compare are those of team mate drivers, who I hasten to add, are allowed to race each other, so in that sense we really don't have alot to go on.

We can have opinions or surmise stuff that is neither positive or conclusive but thats it.

Naming a number one in any sport is arbitrary and imprecise.

The best indicator of who is the best on any given day is who won the most recent event. Similarly the best of the year is whomever won the title.

Until we can agree on the meaning of "best" (which will never happen) these are the only criteria that don't involve opinion and bias.

 

I think the year is exactly the sort of time that's needed to judge. A flash in the pan shouldn't be considered.

Well, that is what *I* said in the first place...or at least that's what a logical person would have understood!

ANYWAY....long story short, it's impossible to say who the best driver is IMO.

 

And across eras utterly impossible. But it's made for a countless number of great arguments over oceans of beer.

Not ever. His tenure, long as it is, doesn't overlap with many of the others In the GP Panthenon, so no valid comparison is possible.
