My 1991 348 TS has two mufflers. I understand some have one. Why are there two on some and one on others? What would happen if you removed the lower one and just ran pipes right out of the upper exhaust?

I do not plan on doing this, just looking for some reasoning. Also, may be looking to upgrade the muffler and was wondering if I need to do both or just the lower one?

    Thanks guys for any help.

Several 348 owners have removed 35 useless pounds from the rear of their cars by removing the lower muff and having downpipes made at local muffler shops for $100 or so.

What happens if you remove the lower muffler? Anyone have experience with the sound, smell, error codes, etc...

What is the point of this thing?

Prior to the most recent turn of the century, my impression is that Ferrari never gave much thought to the advantages of increased power to weight ratio. Adding the extra can to the muffler also helped achieve their perfect 30/70 front to rear weight distribution!
This theory of weight distribution is especially handy for spontaneous high-speed 360's after a hard turn!

The car will be faster and better handling. Better sound, same smell. Codes? what codes? We don' need no stinkin' codes!

So....has anyone out there done this? I am eventually going to update the whole system but if removing the secondary muffler will add a little better sound, save some weight and not start throwing codes, I may give it a try.

The big question is will removing it do these things? Especially the error codes.

Isn't the o2 sensor and thermocouple the last electronic components in the exhaust system? If so, then messing around with the "downstream" cans seems like it would be safe to me, especially if Plugzit endorses it... from reading lots of his previous posts here, he definitely would know.

I might have missed it, but I didn't see where this specific question was addressed.

    Basically, I believe:
    1989 to 1991 = dual-can
    1992+ = single can.

    Evolutionary kinda thing.

Yes, I've done it and so have several others. There is no additional smell, no error codes (impossible as there aren't any sensors/monitoring done past the O2 and temp monitors at the cats). All that will happen is your car will weigh 35 pounds less, it will sound better and feel a little better in the corners. Not bad for around $100.

1993+ = single can. My 92 came with the dual can. :(

I believe a few 348 Serie Speciales were produced in 1992 with single can, but agreed all "standard" 348s that year were dual can. My 1990 TS is running Hyper-Flow cats into a Serie Speciale single can muffler. Sound is great (IMHO).

It looks like there was a correction to the correction :D

Louder, especially when you put your foot into the go pedal. More wail and shriek at the higher RPM levels.

    +1!

There will be no error codes for a simple reason ... there are no sensors on the mufflers.
    Just do it !

Had to watch twice. The first time I forgot to listen! Particularly like the last frame with Z looking straight into the camera.
