After Cars and Coffee had some time to tinker with my 355 this weekend. 1. seatbelt/ ignition buzzer - clipped to wire to the speaker - peace and quiet now. pic 1= speaker is under steering column to the right- remove the speaker box out with a 10mm nut- detach female connector - pic 2= use a flat head screw driver to open box up - speaker unit slides out - locate a black wire attached to speaker pic 3= clip black wire and put unit back together and plug connector back in - viola no more annoying buzzer!!! 2. My inside passenger door handle was sticking causing the handle to remain in the "open" position after lifting - cause door handle rubbing on leather of door "grip" remove phillips screw under grip and apply small amount of grease on area rubbing - no more sticky handle 3. turn signal will not stay in left turn mode - cause rubber boot bunching up when pushing the stalk down. Unbolted steering column cover and freed rubber boot - turn signal working again. Very satisfying making these simple repairs!! That buzzer surgery may just be the single most dramatic change you can make to these cars. Takes all of 15 minutes. Transforms the car from annoying to amazing! Good job. John
The more permanent solution to the rubbing on the inside door handle is to install a flat washer under the leather covered part of the door handle mount to move it out a millimeter or so for more clearance. So remove screw, black flat washer, then under the mouting boss, install a flat fender washer (or possibly two) then reinstall black flat washer and phillips screw.
Thanks guys! I just did the buzzer-ectomy and put in a washer to gain more clearance on the door handle. Excellent return-on-time-invested in these two little mods! Feels so much better to get in and out of the car now. I did it after my drive tonight, but wish I would have done it before hand. I'm looking forward to the next time I put the top down while the car warms up, and all I hear is the motor while putting the leather cover in place.
I have had my 1999 F355 for 5 years. I didn't know there is a buzzer in there. Either mine is broke or previous owner did surgery. Is it supposed to warn if the seatbelt isn't engaged?
It's the one thing that's "broke" that is a good thing. I'll just leave it alone.Man I learn something new on this site every week. Love it.
I looked at that last night, since I didn't like the idea of clipping a wire either. In the end, it was either: de-solder the wire from the circuit board, or clip it and tape it. I went with clip and tape. There is enough wire remaining, that I could re-solder the wire to itself and heat shrink it, if I ever wanted the buzzing to come back (for example, if I show the car at Concorso Italiano again).
Reviving this topic as it’s the best and easiest way to gain some peace and quiet if you ever want to idle with the door open or turn the car off and not have to pull the key. I just desoldered mine so an easy resolder if any crazy future owner wants that horrible noise back in their life...you European chaps don’t know the pain of us idiot American regs. Also like amber (ugh) versus clear (gorgeous) running lamps. I did the buzzer mod recently - clipped the speaker wire and reinstalled the module. Now it's quiet when opening the door, but the F1 system still yells when it's in N. Seems like a good reminder and much easier to live with. The beep/buzzer/scream systems are separate. Also installed a new alarm siren(the GM part) and have no more blinding dash light, although a little more beeping due to the siren working again. I have a remote siren battery setup available if anyone is interested, along with all connectors - it didn't work when I tried retrofitting to the old damaged siren.
Grant, USA, Canada and Japan cars should buzz for doors. Module P/N 137667. Yours must have been modified (or it's a foreign import with a module part number 137667) The F1 buzzer is P/N 174456
Thanks Ian when I have the dash apart I will look. My car was originally USA so it must have been modified early in its life.
F1 or seatbelt? Just make sure it isn't the type of buzzer module which provides power to the brake warning light circuits. i.e. the [!] light on the dash (for brake wear, ABS, etc). i.e. Module 06625 in the following diagram: Instruments, Handbrake and Brake Warning
Actually, after revisiting the circuit, I'm not sure what effect it has on the brake warning system. There is a solenoid in the buzzer module which activates during engine start, and it looks like it would extinguish the brake warning light during start (because it puts volts on both sides of the lamp element). Perhaps our resident electronics guru, Miro, can figure it out
Third attempt at reading the wiring diagram... Disregard above... I think the [!] light comes on during engine start, thanks to the buzzer unit. Looks like a lamp self test circuit. Why they incorporated this into the buzzer, I don't know. The ABS light is supposed to come on for 3 seconds during start, but I don't see a timer circuit for the brake [!] warning light. Ken, maybe you could see what your light does during start with your buzzer unit disconnected?
