Been reading this board for about a year, learned a great deal from the frequent posters here, in the market to buy now and would like to lock one up before next spring, inquired on 5 cars so far and came across this 2004 F1 spider on the bay, daily driver 52k miles, spoke with the seller and claims engine out service last year where they rebuilt the lifters, block was re-sleeved, new belts, gaskets etc. Is this type of rebuild a function of miles, abuse or lack of maintenance? Any input appreciated & thanks in advance. BTW coming out of a past history with Porsche products ready to move into the exciting F-Car world.

Then you should have seen that most of the 50000+ mile cars have not had a rebuild

    For example http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=336040

Nice looking car, but why would you want one with 50k miles?

Thanks for the link to the thread greyboxer, I did read that thread to the end, more interested to see if anyone has experienced similar cars out there with more miles etc. and what they saw on the service history and ppi.

Don't really want a car with 50k miles but didn't want to throw an '04 well optioned Spider out because of miles as I intend to drive it regularly as I do my 911's.

That car was a rental. I'd find another.

If you intend to put a bunch of miles on your potential 360, wouldn't you want to start with lower miles? I have put about 3800 miles on mine in one year. There are a ton of great cars available, keep looking.

Usually rentals are not driven with the utmost respect. Might want to find another one, especially at that price. If it was $15-20K less maybe consider it. Maybe!

My 1999 has 51k miles on it and the mileage wouldn't (obviously didn't) scare me away. What would is the rental history, and if no records can be produced for the rebuild. What was done? Was it done? Anything has a price. If this is comparably priced to cars with 10k miles on them, then get the 10k mile car. If it's priced half-off, then you can decide if it's worth it.

why not ? its not like its at the end of its life cycle and ready to be put out to the salvage pasture...

question is, do you want a rental car?

    and I have 60k on my 1999

I understand the comments on my mileage comment, but when there are so many cars available with low miles for less than 1/2 of original retail, why take the risk? Did both of you with the higher mileage cars start with a car with high miles?

    Valid question worth considering.

I bought my car with around 50k on it this time last year for a VERY good price. It's always funny to me how a ferrari is treated as "different" than any other car. It actually has the same components in it as many porsches and other european cars so why would 50k miles be a deal breaker in a FCar but not a VW?

And define "risk".. something will break that is very expensive to fix? If you mitigate that risk by lowering the price to compensate or have a PPI, then how does that factor in? In a 5000 mile car then bugs haven't emerged yet. Plus it's been my experience that rubber and seals degrade when sitting, and driving the car regularly actually helps it run better. Besides a 6k mile car can have the same issues as a high mile car. (BTW nothing major in the last year with mine.. just smiles. :) )

Miles come into play only IMHO if you have to worry about trade-in or resale 24 months down the line to upgrade to a 430 or a 458. I bought my car to own and it's been rock solid so far, just like any modern car.

A 15k mile car has less mechanical and cosmetic wear than a 50k mile given similar use, and everything else being equal - both can have great variations. As long as car has been driven and serviced regularly I wouldn't be scared of a low mile car!

Great looking car. Amazing actually considering it was a rental. The price is lower compared to other 360 spiders I have seen, but its very logical. The higher miles most definitely bring the price down. If I were you I would look at 2001-02 spiders for not much more money but with a fraction of the mileage. Im not afraid of mileage that high when a car has 2-3 owners, maybe even 4, but when the car was driven by hundreds of people in a hard way, I would continue my search.

Yes, there are some folks who drive their cars and/or buy cars with high(er) mileage, say 40,000+ miles. And, those cars can run fine...

That said, to the OP, two things:

    1) For me, I would never buy an ex-rental. There are too many nice, non-rentals out there...

    2) For me, while I could see the "value logic" in buying a 40k miles+ car for a HUGE discount from a 10k miles car (and I mean huge as in $1 off per mile order of magnitude, or $40,000 less for a 50k mile car than a 10k mile car.). When I was shopping for CS's, I created a "market formula" in excel that tried to reconcile the various cars on the market (both selling transactions and asking prices) by adjusting for options, mileage, condition, service completeness, clutch wear, tire wear, etc. What the "math" showed me was more like $2/mile penalty for high(er) mileage cars. So, even the $1/mile I state here is less than what I saw the market pricing earlier this year...(at least for CS's, I suspect regular 360s have a smaller premium on being kept with low miles and thus suggest $1/mile here).

I guess with regard to the low vs. high mileage on a ferrari religions, I am theoretically okay with owning a high(er) mileage car, BUT it would have to be for a lot less money and even then, I'd prefer to spend the extra $$ and get a lower mileage one (assuming one has the extra $ to put into the car). I don't prefer, to be sure, an "undriven garage queen" but prefer a car with the +/- "average" I tend to see of ~1500-2000 miles per year on modern ferrari's.

Others will certainly disagree, but that's my view.

Guys, thanks for the candid replies, you hit the target in the center as I intend on purchasing a car and driving it as I do my Porsche's and have found what I consider fair discounts on cars with north of 20k miles. I learned something as well as I read the rental / lease info as a regular lease not a joy ride daily rental which I definitely wouldn't consider unless the price was reflective of this fact = $50k. I will continue my search and inquiries as it is a learning process each time I call and converse with a seller.

Isn't this the same company that has the "SuperSpeeders" channel on YT? If so, I'd stay away from that car.

what he said. It's a rental ferrari hence the rebuild.I wouldn't be afraid of the miles cars are made to last if properly maintained, and a ferrari is no different. fr 55k I would consider that car, nothing more. That has nothing to do with the miles, just the fact it was rented out by people who probably beat it badly.
