Well... I may be a little biased, but I still prefer the 348 over the 430, both in looks and the driving feel. Took the 348 out for a rare drive out yesterday with a friend in his 430. We've got some freak weather here in the UK for the last few days. Hitting 30 degrees.... in October!!!!! 348 v 430 ?? Bwaa Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Thanks for the laugh man. Nobody in their right mind who really could choose between either would take the 348. Ever. A few people might convince themselves to be satisfied with their 348s, but that's a different scenario. Nice pictures, and nice cars btw.
I don't agree. Take money, value, resale, running cost etc. out of the equation and I'd still choose my F355 over a 360 or F430 and even the 458. The newer cars just don't "do it" for me. Don't get me wrong, they are incredible machines that will out perform on paper and track but they aren't the cars that I lusted after as a teenager. The current exterior and interior designs are just not my style, it's not what I think of when I think about Ferrari. Rob
You probably wouldn't understand, but there are many 348/355 owners who can afford to purchase 430's but don't as they prefer their existing ride.
The fact is if you want nothing but performance get a Nissan, Subaru or Honda. Once you take away that performance variable you are left with esthetics. Yep, the jellybean effect of modern Fcars and their huge sizes do nothing for me.... I do wish for a 355 rear end on my 348 though.
Now I'm laughing harder. Who said anything about a 355?? If you need to move the goalposts to win a game then you have an inferior team, have you not? If you're talking 355 then that's a different thing altogether. I had a 355 and a 360 spider at the same time a few years back. Suffice to say I sold the 360 after a couple of years, I still have the 355 and plan to leave it to my kids.
So when you prefer the 355 over a 360, that's ok. But if I prefer a 348 over a 430, then that's laughable?
I wish a 360 or 430 did it for me - it would be cheaper for me, I promise. I've driven both - the 430 around a track and I wouldn't buy either. The 348 is raw - you feel like you're part of the road - she reacts instantly to your feedback and there aren't stupid systems trying to drive the car for me. Beyond the numb driving, they both look like they got beaten with the ugly stick (just my opinion). I considered a 355 but I still like the look of the 348 better and I didn't want power steering - airbags, etc. I happen to love the look of the new California (so you get a sense of my taste) but I could never have it as my only Ferrari because its missing a pedal. I'm in the camp that Ferrari design went to he'll after the '80s. Erik
oh dear.... another 348 hater amongst us It would be a damn sight cheaper for me as well I drove that yellow 430 in the pictures above for a couple of hours and I found it a little boring as I did the 360's that I've driven. Great car, but I didn't really enjoy it. Then again I know that when the 430 owner drives my car, he will hate it because it's hard work.
I have driven and or ridden in nearly every 'modern" Ferrari to date, inlcuding the new 458. They are all awesome in there own way. Coming from a "hot rod" background, and now in a position to buy just about any car I want, I made my first Ferrari the 348. Not for price, but for the "tradition" of the car. Still raw, can work on it yourself and the look screams Ferrari from the way I remember it. For me, and I suspect many others, owning a car is not just about the newest and most expensive model. People who purchase on this alone are doing so to impress others, not for the passion of the car. So, with that said, I actually love the look of the more modern Ferrari's and the performance is obviously far superior than a 348 or a 355 for that matter. But, what I look for and love about the "older" models is the feel of a car that you have to drive. I also love the looks that in my opinion are what Ferrari was all about when I was a kid many years ago. To say that everyone that could choose would take a 430 over a 348 is not that accurate. I for one could buy either and chose the 348 for my first Ferrari. Will I ever move to a newer model? Maybe. But I had the choice and chose not too. I am sure there are many others like me as well who love the lines and rawness of the past while still respecting the modern cars as well. Like they say....."to each there own". At the end of the day, they are all Ferrari's and in some way I love them all.
Not a hater, just a realist. In fact, there's not a single car ever made that I hate. How can any adult 'hate' a car?
The 360 never did anything for me. Adding another 100 HP did not do that much either. What you are feeling here is the mass centralization that the 348 and 355 have that the 308, 328, 360, and 430 lack. The radiators adjacent to the engine pull a big dolup of weight from the nose and place it near the CoG. This reduces the polar moment of these cars and allows them to react faster to steering inputs (and faster to road induced inputs to the car.) This makes the car faster in a good drivers hands and faster to get into trouble in the hands of a not so good driver. Ferrari went back to the front radiators to slow the car's polar response and to make it easier to drive "sort of fast". The only real problem with the F355 is the amount of overboost on the Power Steering.
Both look great. I wouldn't mind getting a 6 speed F430 Spider some day, as it's "last of the manuals" and therefore somewhat special IMHO.
My first rule of car opinions: each to their own. There are no right and wrong answers to what car is better or best.
It's funny I ran across this thread today. I strongly considered a 348 before I bought my 360. It seems you either love or dislike the 348 styling. I still think it looks cool, and as a package the 348 is a really nice "old paradigm" ferrari. I actually sat in one for the first time on thursday. It has a tight, responsive sporty feel that reminds me of an old school 911, up to the 993. Definitely interesting. The 360 on the other hand has a modern feel to it that I liked, a tad detached, but still tight and responsive. By the way, I'm a 3 pedal guy through and through.. so I can't adore the 458 completely. (I'd still entertain on a test drive in the future. ;-) ) What sold me on the 360, was the dual airbags and the core design focus on a drivable 911-like car. I also saw enough horrific 360 crashes on wrecked exotics that the driver survived, convincing me that the car was a safer car than a 20 year old design. I happen to like curvy cars and the 360 had curves in all the right places. Despite SWEET pricing on 348's into the 30's... the thing that worried me the most was the unobtainium parts.. my 79 928 is at that point, and I was worried for maintaining the car. One thing that annoys me to all get out on rennlist is when the 928 guys compare their cars to modern cars. Come on... 20-30 years of R+D. It's stupid and fools no one. The 360 is simply a car that benefits from a decade of automotive R+D. A 348 should "do it" because it is a really cool car. I can't see how a comparison is even in the cards. Oh, and laughing (even virtually) at a person for their preference... what bdelp said above.
