I have a spare used TCU that I'd like to swap in to see if it fixes an intermittent paddle shifting issue. The workshop manual says to start by using an SD-1 to read a clutch position value out of the old TCU, do the swap, then enter that value into the new TCU. How important is this? The manual also calls for "PIS" and "IO" self-calibrations, but those procedures are done with the ignition key and pedals and do not seem to need the SD-1. I'm hoping the SD-1 step is optional so that I can do the swap myself and avoid a trip to the dealership. Has anyone tried this?

The clutch value is important as it dictates how the ecu inerprets the measurement from the pis sensor. Any specialist with an Sd1 or an sd2 with porting software can do this for you and it shouldn't cost the earth...
