The Poorest Ferrari Owner?

28 years old...small business owner. Ill throw my hat in the ring as soon as that 348 finds its way into my garage.

 

I can't recall meeting an owner of any older model Ferrari who was anything less than an expert on the complete history of his/her car and knew the history of the marque as well. The older "modern" Ferraris now such as the 308, 348, 355, 360, etc, etc are now becoming affordable to the "average Joe" and this is a wonderful thing. You are taking on a big commitment owning a 10+ year old supercar, and the pride of ownership really shows in these older models.

I'm not saying people who can afford brand new are any less passionate, just that more often than not, the people that I meet with a newer model Ferrari vs and older model are not as passionate and knowledgeable. It seems to be more of a status symbol than anything else for some of the people who own them.

This is where the "poorest Ferrari owner" question makes sense to me. To me it's basically asking who is most willing to set aside life's normal luxuries just to own a car that they have loved since it was a poster on the wall of their bedroom.

To answer the original question, an associate of mine that I was stationed in Italy with was an Air Force E-4 (which means he was making about $30k a year gross) had a 308 that he drove daily, even parked it outside as he lived in the barracks, and made so many sacrifices just for the car, and I respected him for it. He wasn't stupid with his money, he had money to fix the car if/when it went wrong, had money to support himself, and he worked on it himself as much as he could. He had a genuine love and passion for that car and Ferrari that I wish more people shared.

 

Not for the status. However to own a classic... for the rush... for the RPM for the $$. Enough said. : )

I am one of the poorest by any measure.

I saved for over 25 years thru 3 marriages and being down-sized. Car is paid for.

I still have to save for parts and tools and turn my own wrenches.

 

It took me 3 years to save and buy mine, anything U want bad enough is possible
yes I make low 6 Figs and I had to come overseas to do it.

You sitting in the whale foreskin upholstered Bark-A-Lounger, sitting on a putting green manicured lawn over looking the Alps while sipping on a cold drink...... and this while rewriting the 308 service manual. YOU Sir, are my hero.

 

It does not matter how you got it. What matters is that you got it. It yours and its the one you wanted. Many people dream, but like many of you stated your did what you felt was required to achieve your dream. I personally feel that is what it is about. You did what you did to make your dream happen. I admire all that go for it. Same for those who are working on getting theirs. It took me til I was 54 before I got mine, but it was well worth the wait. I just hope that we all enjoy our good fortune and realize that we only get to keep them for a short time.

If I had to guess (based on net worth), it might be an owner of a modern Fcar. The kind that stretched too far to afford many latest-and-greatest toys that has a negative net worth...trying to offload assets to meet loan obligations. Those with older Fcars have to pay for them in cash so they have + net worth so I doubt it's any of them.

HA HA HA. It wasn't the three marriages ...... but the TWO DIVORCES.


The First took me for EVERYTHING I HAD. Granted it wasn't much at all, but still, 4 years of savings gone.

The Second took me AGAIN for everything I had. That time it was not quite so little ... to me. 11 years of savings gone.


I'd be a close to a CASH millionare today if the second did not happen.


BUT I WOULD be NOWHERE NEAR AS HAPPY.

So .... it was SO worth it !!!!!!

Money management? At 35-40k a year you are not driving a Ferrari unless you plan on living in it as well. And if you somehow managed to pull it off and own one, I can't even imagine the level of miser you must be. Sure the car can be "had" for 75k, but what about actual running costs? 35-40k a year income even a new Honda on payments is a huge purchase. Joke post.

 

I don't quite understand the point of your post/thread. Are you trying to see if you can afford a Ferrari while being poor at the same time? The answer is no.

 

I used to live in Voorhees, NJ. There was a pizza shop where one of the delivery guys drove a beat-up blue Mondial 8. I thought there was something very cool about that. Never saw the guy, but I always pictured Jeff Bridges as "The Dude" from THE BIG LEBOWSKI.

... is richer than the richest billionaire you've ever known. There is no shame in being poor, only in driving poorly.

After family and obligations are taken care of, it's all what you really want to do. I have a small and old house out in the country, but in front of it is a really cool car. If certain things work out for me, a Ferrari may join it sometime next year, although I suppose first I'd have to build a garage. Then I may qualify as the poorest Ferrari owner ever.

Houses don't mean much to me, so long as they're leak-proof, air-conditioned, and have satellite TV. Others, for whatever strange reason, think a big expensive house on a manicured lawn in a gated HOA fascist dictatorship is the way to true happiness.

Whatever you decide to do, always remember it's never too late to have a happy childhood. =o)

 

Disagree. IMO, it was a well phrased question and came off as neutral. It also applies to a vast number of owners of other makes.

As for any seemingly unattainable goal, the best answer is "where there's a will there's a way".

so what is yearly maintenance on a 360 these days ?

I am "oh so close" to pulling the trigger on a 328 and finally having a Ferrari, I could probably squeeze into a 360 but I could not do my own maintenance on a 360 so what is the budget for that ?

For me the 328 is perfect, I can easily do all the work it will ever need but a 360 would be nicer And to stay on topic, i have been saving decades, I could have had one 10 years ago but I was not and still not willing to get rid of my Dino.
