I'm going to be in SLC for business for part of next week and was looking for any advice on what to check out while in the city during the afternoons.

    Car stuff:

You can run out to Miller Motorsports Park and check out their museum. They have some really nice Ford/Shelby stuff from the 60's. Also have a kart track with rentals depending on what day it is and the weather.

You can run down to Provo and see Kirkham Motorsports if you are into Cobras. They make amazing stuff. www.kirkhammotorsports.com

Price Museum of Speed in SLC: http://pricemuseumofspeed.org/

Harris Imports is the local Ferrari dealer on Main street in SLC.

I would recommend heading up Little Cottonwood Canyon, SnowBird and Alta resorts. you will see some amazing colors this time of year. plus a really fun drive. A good restaurant in that area is Porcupine pub and grill (very good).

If you're even REMOTELY into the history of the area, wander through
the LDS Temple complex and Brigham Young's House - "The Beehive House"
Regardless of how you view the Mormon religion, there's a lot of very very
    cool history there.

No, I'm not LDS. Not even close. But I really did enjoy the (self-guided) tour of the
whole Temple Square area of downtown. It's free, and a zillion beautiful young
LDS ladies would love to show you around the campus!

They've already hit most of the best, especially Temple Square. Park City isn't too far of a drive out of town if you can make it.

    2 things

    1) Go see the Tabernacle --- religion and / or politics aside.....go see it. It is INCREDIBLE.

    2) Try to get a beer after 12AM -- it's like a scavenger hunt ;)

Is the Tabernacle different from the temple? From what I understand they don't let visitors into the temple?

No visitors inside the temple, but the tabernacle is just west of there. The building itself is an interesting piece with very good acoustics, I've played in an orchestra there. They have daily performances there and I would suggest catching one of those, especially one with the choir or an organ recital. There a few other visitor center buildings in the area, you can either do a tour or just walk around.

Next Saturday (29th) is a local endurance race at Miller and those are always fun to watch. Park City and the Olympic Park can be interesting if you have time. They do summer bobsled rides and other attractions.

The fall colors are still pretty good, take a drive through any of the canyons and it will be worth your time. I'll attach a picture of a drive I took up Provo canyon a couple weeks ago. A drive to Antelope Island may also be fun, plenty of Buffalo and other animals out and about.
As far as food, you could check out the Utah Eatery Thread.
Mitt Romney always stops at the Hires Big H on 700 east in SLC, good old fashioned greasy burgers. Salt City Burger Co is also good, more gourmet than Hires. My favorite Mexican is Los Hermanos down in Utah county. Rocky Mountain Wing Shak also has some decent wings.

SLC is definitely an interesting city in the sense that it felt pretty abandoned downtown after everyone left work for the day. The temple is pretty impressive, too bad they don't let anyone inside. Unfortunately I didn't have time to make it to any of the auto related attractions, but did successfully find tasty beverages after midnight.

If I were stuck in SLC (I fly through it often--lol) I would go have lunch with SBrake--and make him pay. :p

Hope you like the dollar menu at McDonalds.

Maybe I could take you some place authentic, with fry sauce. Mmmmmmmmm, fry sauce.
