Hello, Im looking for a few driving specifications of a 1995 355 Berlinetta. I have done some research online and have found a few different numbers. 0-100-0 mph time of 15.6 seconds, ¼ mile time of 12.8 seconds, and a lateral G of 1.1

If anyone has personal knowledge that these numbers are correct I would appreciate it. The reason for these specs...I have wanted a Ferrari 355 Berlinetta for years. I worked on one a while back and seriously fell in-love with it. I have looked endlessly for one in the 30k price range needing a major engine out service. but it has become apparent to me that my price range just isn't possible. So im gonna build a car to meet the 355 specs. to hold me over until I can afford to buy and properly maintain the car as it should be. My dream would be to completely restore a 355. but until I have the means to complete that dream, This project should hold me over.

I hope this doesn't anger anyone.

    Thank you,

    Rob

Welcome Rob. As you probably know, there are several used sports cars available for $30K or less that are faster or equally as fast as a F355. The driving experience is different, the but acceleration advantage is real.

I am going to cite just two that I've owned in the past which are both really good cars, but in different ways.

    1) C5 Corvette Z06, 2002-2004
    2) BMW E46 M3, 2001-2006

You really don't need to "build" either car (i.e. do a lot of mods and tuning.) They are both good fun for the $$ and available now in the low $20K range or lower.

    Good luck on the journey!

I would add a BMW Z4M coupe to the list. They are harder to find, but can be had for around 30K. I had a 2006 Z4 3.0si coupe and it was outrangeously fun to drive on the backroads and track. The Z4M takes it to another level.

Driving a F355 is a different level of performance that has to be felt to be believed. It is an awe inspiriing experience. It may get outrun by the newer cars on sheer acceleration, but the handling is really incredible and most likely can take the lead on the twisties.

By "build" you don't mean a replica do you? That I can't support.

Now one of these on the other hand.....

Would be a blast and still unique enough to turn heads. You would absolutely destroy an F355 if you had a $30K La Bala.

Not a replica by any means! I wouldn't do that.

I want to build a car because I know it will bring more satisfaction than just buying a stock car that preforms equally as impressive.

I intend on building a car, Kinda from scratch, having it be street legal in my state, Passing my states inspection laws. insured, and would like to drive it to a track and see how it does.

Go to the locost forums and check out the 'non-traditonal' builds. Lots of mid engined home built cars there that will be much quicker than a 355. However, I'd keep a look out as a 355 needing service should be under $35k at this point...

Biggest hurdle for a home built is building a decent body, lots and lots of work and unless you are quite visionary, it risks being quite ugly. Bonus is that even if it is, you'll still love it because you built it. I had started design on a DSR (1000lb closed wheel single seater with a 1000cc motorcycle engine) but then deced to buy a 355 and shelve that idea for a few years.

If anyone has any information on where I could find a 355 in my price range Id thoroughly appreciate it. I wont stop the search. I just think this will be a fun project till my dream car comes around.

Thank you for this. I have been doing alot of research on how to title and insure a custom build car and this has helped me immensely.

An F355 for $35k is going to need more than just a major.

Maybe, but what's the most you've seen a 355 sell for lately? Asking prices are all over the place, but I'm not seeing any actually sell for more than 40k. I am going to get one that's had an engine out in the last year and most of the usual 355 problems fixed for 39k this weekend. We'll see if there are any issues when I get there.

If you want a gut punch, look at the car values on Hagerty, concours condition is 42k, #3 condition is 31k which is the condition I'd put a decent 355 needing service at. There's a spider for sale that needs a major and cosmetic work but runs for 28k on CL. Those values would indicate I'm over paying unless the car is pristine. There are a lot of spiders for sale, I've seen a couple with higher mileage for sale at 35k with recent service, I just was not interested in a spider or targa so did not investigate. There's a GTB with salvage title needing a major for 39k right now on ebay, I kind of doubt they'll get over 30.

If the op looks hard, I bet he can find one. That being said, the only thing that I would enjoy more than a Ferrari is a car I build myself, so that is still on the table for me at some point.

This one will be one to watch to see where the market is as there's no reserve:
