Has anyone heard of this Co; were they well known in the 80's. I got this brochure from ebay, thought it would be a good souvenir. I saw a 308 spider here in the austin area several years ago. Im not sure if it was from these guys, but I was not impressed with the quality. I think there are pics of it around the site somewhere. Aaron
I have seen photos of a few convertibles. I am not completely convinced that the car LOOKS right like that though. Just my .02 PDG
You mean that it looks like someone hand drew it onto the picture after the fact? Yeah, something is wrong there.
There was in fact one in Texas for a long time, Martin at Cavallino Motors bought it.... There were several aftermarket conversions and the Factory did ONE example themselves as a "study"......there's been other threads on it. But that 's a cool find from eBay!!
Back in the 80's, they along with Koenig Specials were very well known in customizing mostly german cars and very few Ferraris.
A friend in my town that I know from the Alfa scene is restoring one for the owner, it was a shell with no engine and interior. It has nice paint by now but they don´t look good with the top down, and with top us it´s a kit car. A GTS provides all the open driving experience without the disadvantages of a soft top, and it looks super with the top in place, especially when the top is body colour. I could never understand why more 355 Spider were sold instead of GTS, must be people that want to be looked at from every angle. I like that the 458 Spider looks more like a GTS again (to avoid the word Targa that is trademarked by some german car manufacturer).
I think the body style lends itself very nicely to the convertible shape. This has nothing to do with structural integrity or how the thing looks with the top up. I like the look of a 328/308 convertible more than I like the Mondial. I'm not big on conversions, though, because it never comes out right. (So much more to engineering a convertible than just cutting off a top and putting canvas on top bows!!!)
Interesting find on ebay! I found more images of these cars by searching "lorenz & rankl ferrari" on google images. Apparently Lorenz & Rankl applied their surgical skills to Boxers and a number of other European makes. I think the 308 in particular looks okay from some angles without a top, but this look does not appeal to my eye overall. The Boxer really loses its exotic appeal, IMHO... http://www.exoticsonroad.com/picture/?937439/Ferrari-308-GTSi-Spider-Lorenz-and-Rankl http://up.autotitre.com/forum/up/f48koenig_0aado.jpg http://www.carpassion.com/ferrari-308-328-348/19345-308-spider.html
I agree it looks good to me with the top down but I have seen pictures of those with the top up and they look awful to me. I don't care for conversions though. I don't like to think of destroying the original integrity of a Ferrari. I have seen similar pictures of Testrossa and I feel the same about them as well. They look good with the top down but looks bad with the top up. IMO
convertible 308s, doesn't look the same as your brochure. must be a different company. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think, if they put those humps behind the head rest like the 360 Spider, it might look q lot better.
why would anyone do this to a 308/328 is just nuts... an idiot... This just makes me sick to see this.... Double thumbs down!
