I would like to know what the proper idle spec is for the 5.2 355.

Or chime in if yours is high or low...

    I don't have a 355 but it should be at about 950/rpm.

1040 +/-20 RPM when hot, according to the 5.2 diagnosis document and the WSM.
Air conditionning ON increases the idle speed by an extra 20 RPM.
    Mine was OK with that.

Mine sits around 1050 when warmed-up.

The 355 also has a primitive smart charging system that will increase idle speed if bat voltage is low to increase charge from the alternator

1050+/-50 is what the WSM indicates.

It sure seems high, but I guess that is how it is, I would think that the car would seem a lot quieter and smoother at a 700RPM idle - maybe not?

Well you got me there, while this maybe true - there are still the odd time I wish the car was a little more low key - one of the reasons I like the grigio.

from my limited knowledge the flat crankshaft and firing order requires a higher than normal idle speed for smoothness and vibration control.

I'm sure others could expand on this.

Mine ('99 355 Spider six-speed) idles right at 1000.... it might be 1050 (hard to tell to that degree on the tach).

1000 RPM except if it's under 50 degrees; then it's 1200 for maybe the first few minutes.

    Cool so that's 6 different tick over limits, 9,50, 900, 1200, 1040, 1050 & 1000 RPM.
That's almost one for every day of the week. Can i have just one more for Sunday, and i will have the complete set :D

The cool part about the F355 is that even at idle, you are always traveling 12 mph.

Don't know what I mean? Take a close look next time you're at a stoplight.

I've got a 2.7 car and idle is a tick over 1000. Remember that the cams are pretty aggressive on these cars so conventional 700-800 idle speed is not realistic as it would get pretty choked up when coming off idle.

The idle of your F355 will be most consistent if your starting procedure is consistent.

All lights, A/C, radio, etc. should be off before turning the key on.

This makes a big difference in the day to day consistency of the idle speed.

You know - there are times that I could swear this is true. I do notice the idle change (I have watched it on the scanner, since I drive the car with it hooked up sometimes) maybe 50 RPM +- or a little more.

Haha, I noticed that, too! Honestly, that was the first question I asked about when I began inquiring about them.

Interesting Italian technology, there. Almost Star Trek-like.

Mine crans and starts around 1300-1400 when the ambient temp is at 50 or below. It settles out to about 1000 or just a smidgen under once everything has warmed up.

Hi, this gives about all figures I needed. Mine (watched today) is arround 1050 +/-50 when warm too. So i guess i am in normal range..
Its just the beginning, after the interior cleanup, I start to investigate on engine as a next step. at least the emission , the idle and even bypass valve look ok. time to take engine appart, i think, as the engines shakes a little bit even when I am in driver seat. I gues that is not a good sign so lets find out.

Just bought a F355 and noticed the high revs at idle, and thought it was abnormal, but you all seem to have the similar revs a idle. Good, then I can relax.

I have an F 355, 1997, 15K miles, Idles at 1000-1050 warm, a bit higher at start up. Where is your oil pressure? Mine seems a bit low when warm...below 20 if I recall correctly....a lot higher at cold-start.

You will get used to it. That is right where it is supposed to be. I thought it was kinda weird at first but now I don't even notice it unless someone in the passenger seat points it out and asks about it.
