Not a VW based car - a BRITISH car!

    (But a good guess...)

thats got more than a whiff of kit car about it, but then hand finished in wood? hmmm

I'd think about something from Marcos perhaps, or maybe a well built GTM Rossa mk1

    But I'm just guessing...

.... and you are close enough. It is a Mini based special, a Biota. About 30 were made over seven years, starting in '69.

    Hmmm....

It looks like an air conditioning duct, stuck somewhere in the roof over the right rear door. The amount of scratching around the screw heads would indicate it was taken apart a few times - so it is a car of a certain age. At a guess - a RR Phantom V? Mind you, it could be a Docker Daimler. I don't know if they had air con in the back...

I will be a little more specific and postulate that it is either an S1, S2 or S3 Bentley. Leaning towards an S3.
