I have a 97 355 spyder. The top is currently down. I want to winterize the car and in doing so wish to put the top back up. I have tried several different tacts, all have failed. I am not new to the car, so doors closed, brake on, clutch in, engine on etc. Very familiar with the process, even put on clean socks. So, the process, seats move forward, windows do not move down the approximate 2 inches. I get a beeping sound. OK, I am thinking window micro-switch. I shut the car down, battery off, start over. Same thing. OK, shut car down, turn battery back on and try emergency up/down switch in the console between the seats. Still no response, now I am thinking, not micro-switch. I checked the fluid for the hydraulic unit, all is full and OK. Garage is not cold enough to cause thickening of fluid. Also, checked both fuse boxes, all fuses are OK including the two in the console unit between the seats.

So, I am stumped. The windows work fine with the window switches when the car is not in the up/down mode. Seats move fine. I have tried to assist the roof a bit manually, still no response.

Thoughts please, top-less in Vancouver and it's cooling

Did you change the fuses or only checked them, I still think it's 1 of the fuses.

I would guess that there is another micro switch messing things up, since you mentioned that the windows aren't dropping. My best guess would be the microswitch that tells the car that the top is unlatched. Or if there isn't one that tells the car the top is unlatched, then the one that senses when the roof has been pushed back enough to go. (but from your description, there was a beep at this point, so maybe not).

Good luck. Hope you're able to get it sorted soon.

Do not force the roof while the windows are up! This would cause damage to the windows. You need to find out why they stay up first.
Have you tried to lower them manually and then to close the roof?

Thanks for your thoughts. I have lowered the windows using the window switches thinking that the sensor would pick up the fact that the windows are down. No change. My thoughts are that if the car is in top up/down mode, the regular window action/detection is excluded in the up/down process so the ECU does not pick up the fact that they are down. The manual actually states that the windows cannot be operated using the window switches when the car is in the top up/down mode. This is the reason I tried using the emergency operating button in the console. Still no action. I might try unplugging the ECU and starting over. Although, this should be the same as shutting off the battery.

Someone also suggested replacing the two fuses, I will do that as well although I think this is a long shot.

    Other suggestions welcome.

    Thank you

Actually, put the windows down and use the emerg. switch - if that works then wire the emerg. permanently to the main switch.

If you need help I am local so I might be able to look at it for you.
