What's the deal with WGN broadcasting Hokey TV to the rest of the planet?
Other than televising the crushing defeats of the Cubs nationwide the WGN cable channel has lots of very old reruns and some really trashy modern shows. The cable channel seen elsewhere isn't the same as channel 9 locally.
WGN was one of the first "super stations" and is a major reason why we can watch so many sporting events nationwide. In the early 1980’s, the Bulls sued the NBA over the "less is more" policy that blocked games in certain markets. WGN’s broadcast area was cited as one of the main reasons to allow multiple games to be telecast in the same market. However, today WGN is a shadow of its former greatness and home to some truly awful television.
It's actually Worlds Greatest Newspaper (WGN) , Which is owned by the Tribune. For many years, WGN has had two broadcasts, local and cable. Of course thier news is sent on both, but because of competing markets in different cities, they just run that old stuff on the cable side so they don't conflict with other markets.
Their policy is horrible. They need to televise the Hawks games on the cable side so we former Chicago residents can see all the games.
Though I'm sure it generates whatever $ into coffers, the National syndication of Matlock & Walker, Texas Ranger, etc. are kinda played out. Neither says "Chicago" to me. Chicagoans should stage an OWGN protest! Image Unavailable, Please Login
