Hi all, I picked up a '95 355 a little over a week ago and have put around 1200 miles on it and it's been running great. However, I have a clunk in the rear end that happens if I crack the throttle quickly or do an aggressive full throttle 1-2 or 2-3 shift and I can't figure out the cause. It doesn't happen at all in normal driving, only if driving aggressively, though I can get it to clunk if I let off the throttle completely and quickly open it again, but it's much less severe. I did a search and all I could find were clutch shaft issues on early 348's or possibly clutch bearing issues? It feels like motor or trans mounts, but I inspected them when it was on a lift for an alignment and couldn't see anything obvious. The boot for the shift rod was touching the frame cross member which didn't look quite right, so the mounts could be sagging. Does anybody have a picture of that area so I can see if mine looks out of whack? Has anybody else had this problem? Any ideas on how to further troubleshoot? I put the car in 4th and rocked it back and forth but couldn't hear or feel anything. The car shifts fine and doesn't make any strange noises. The clutch does not slip at all and doesn't chatter. There was no detectable suspension slop when aligning the car. The car had an engine out a little less than a year and 3k miles ago. I'd like to take care of this over the winter if I can figure out what it is. I'm not averse to pulling the engine/trans if I have to, but want to make sure I've found the problem before I do that.

My guess is a motor mount.

Try putting the car on jack stands, remove the rear wheels, then use a floor jack with a 2x10x10 block of wood or something on it that fits under the front area of the engine or pan to support it and GENTLY jack it up to see how much it moves. Only go up about an inch or less and then take a close look at the motor mounts.

Just thought I'd check back in, jacked the car up as the clutch started squeeling like a stuck pig and sometimes goes to the floor so started taking the car apart. While under there I inspected the motor mounts. As expected, they're completely shot. Oddly enough, the trans mounts look fine, though. Now I have to decide whether to go with the stock mounts or upgrade to challenge/550 mounts. I'm also hoping I get can the T/O bearing rebuilt but have to get it out first and verify that's the problem...

Get the challenge mounts, there stronger! I did not notice any more noise transferred through them to the interior while driving either so it worked for me.

Gonna use Spherics in Gardena to rebuild the TO bearing?

That's the plan, do they still do it? I just got it out of the car and the TO bearing is definitely the problem - I could barely turn it by hand. Everything else looks fine, so I guess I'll give them a call tomorrow (if they're open).

Now I have to decide whether to put the Capristo back on or put the stock back on and sell it. Is the Capristo worth any power or is it just sound? I have test pipes, everything else stock. Weight wise they feel about the same, so if there's no performance gain I'd just as soon sell and get some challenge rims and track tires.

I'd be surprised if they weren't open. I think the guy probably lives there.
The Capristo is worth 10hp or so over stock, but then weight savings is more satisfying performance-wise to me. Lighter wheels and track tires would be my choice every time.
Lighter seats, battery, radio delete....now we're talking!

Sent it to spherics today, hopefuly it's rebuildable. It will still turn but is very rough. We'll see what they say.

Undecided on the exhaust, but if it's worth some power I'll probably keep it and wait on the rims. I have to decide whether to replace the front tires with another pair of dunlop sp 2000's to go with the practically new rears or replace the whole set with pilot super sports.

    Indeed!

....but, that creeper is a bit too "sissy" ---- it doesn't count if you can actually be comfortable while you're wrenchin' --- gotta lay down and squirm right against that cold, hard concrete.....and rack up a couple of bruises on your shoulders and back :) lol -- j/k

    Dude,

At my age, I am done with crawling around on the floor, beating my shoulders to pieces trying to torque an engine mount to 125 ft-lbs. I just did a clutch on a BMW M3 on a four post lift. With the car 6 feet up in the air, it was actually enjoyable working on the thing. I even used air impact wrenches on every nut I can get to with the IR wrench. No need to work harder than you have to...

If that is super sissy, then sissy I am

No issue with the air tools or the stool with the handy tray on the bottom so I don't lose any hardware? Next time I'll be sure to pull it out into the gravel driveway and use only the included tool kit. Concrete is for sissies, try dirt or gravel where you really get bruised up and if you drop a nut or bolt you lose a half hour looking for it.

Shoot, and I was about to post advice on which shade-trees were best to work under.
    1. Oak trees produce acorns and drop lots of small branches.
    2. Roots near the surface are a problem.
    3. Branches, however, make good engine hoists.

Glad to hear you took it that way :). My sense of humor can be a bit obtuse sometimes.....and not always taken in the good-spirited nature in which it is intended.
