Is it a major PITA? I really want to inspect the clutch after I found the triple seals were leaking, but I'm a bit reluctant to do so as it looks like it could be a nightmare to get back together properly. Maybe not, I dunno. I see that the Hill Engineering clutch alignment tool is only good for single disc clutches

Sometimes a PITA but it can be done. I've used tape-wrapped deep sockets before to accurately line them up. Often it takes a few tries to align the splines just right, taking the can on and off. Just be patient and you will succeed!

It is nothing like doing a car with a twin disc and a regular trans. then you are hanging the tranny in the air trying to line it up...

Are you sure yours is a dual plate? I thought all SS's were single plate since the SS line began in late 1992

Not true. I used the Hill tool to line up my dual clutch discs. Check out my clutch rebuild thread to see.

I did, I was wondering about that. On the Ricambi site it says it is not suitable for dual disc clutches, though. Wasn't sure if maybe it is a discontinued item or something. Guess not!

Ace, my car is kind of an interesting case. It began life as a regular old '89 TS, but back in January of '92 (IIRC), while she was with Ingenere, FNA used it as a guinea pig for the SS upgrades. It's actually the earliest car to be converted, but it was not numbered as an SS.

I read on another thread that you could use a 22mm socket to center the discs. I bought a deep 22 mm socket at Autozone and found the little plastic fitting that they use to hang it on the display case when trimmed and sanded a little will snug down into the smaller hole that the inner shaft fits in. I also had some scrap plexiglass about 2mm thick that I cut into 2 strips about 3 mm wide to try to line up those teeth that fit on the outer shaft. Put the socket douwn in there first, then slide the 2 strips down the outsides of the socket. It did work but getting that pumkin on was a PIA. It took a couple of tries of re centering everything before it slid on. I was just about to give up and order the official tool when.. presto.. it slid on.
If you do open up the clutch, use the bolts for the starter to do the initial compression of the plates.

Wow! That would be absolutely awesome!! If you don't mind, sure! I'll treat it as I would a child, I promise.

Just to be 100% sure, I DID see that on the site, right? I'm not just on crack or dreaming this up, am I? :)

Yes, you did see it listed incorrectly on our site. Fixed now.

The tool just went postal priority: 9101010521297214124112. There is a pre-paid return label inside the box to send it home when you're done. You'll probably have it with the other stuff you ordered earlier in the week (assuming you're the Mr. Chupacabra in Suffolk!)

Haha, yes, as far as I know, I am the only existing Mr. Chupacabra. My avatar is me just after a haircut. Sexy, huh? :)

Seriously, thanks so much. Hopefully, everything will be in good enough repair and I won't have to send the plates/flywheel out for resurfacing or anything. So, I'll try to be as expeditious as possible with it's return.

OK...deadlifting 300 feels easy. I can do over 20 pull-ups in a row with good form. My 2 minute pushup rounds are in good Navy SEAL territory. I am not a weakling.

SO WHY CAN'T I BUDGE THESE DAMN STARTER RING GEAR BOLTS???!!! AHHHH!! I swear I think someone welded them in.

Any tricks? I pressed down on the whole assembly to keep it from rotating, but even still -- can't get so much as a millimeter of movement from these stupid things.

This is making me feel like a wuss :)

Edit -- Nevermind...just had to hammer on the wrench a bit. I'm so paranoid of breaking something, common sense departs. Maybe I AM a wuss!! :)

My first dual clutchs on 348's I did by eye. no alignment tool. Then after I blew a clutch shaft that became my new alignment tool. It is an easy job and talked about to death on Fchat. Follow anyone of the dozen threads and you will be fine.

I just removed and replace a worn clutch on friends little FWD Ford Festiva today.

I lined the clutch up by eye and the gearbox went straight in.

    Yeah, I'm a pansy, what can I say? :)

I got it open and was overjoyed to find everything looks fantastic! The plates have very little wear on them at all, and I haven't exactly been loafing around in this thing. It's all in your technique, I suppose. No fluid has reached the discs, either, so I think I'm good to go!
