Yeah, I won't be buying that one if that's the way the salesmen treat the cars.

Why do you think that hurts the engine?

    It doesn't.

Shutting it down right after high revs is not a good idea, but that style of reving is done all the time to warm up race engines with no problem.

The cats heat up to the point where they let unburned hydrocarbons pass through. The exhaust is then hot enough to ignite them downstream.

Won't hurt the engine as has been pointed out. Catalyst life is another thing.

It still seems like this would hurt the engine. It sounded like he was at high revs the entire time and logic dictates that constant high revving isn't good for the car. Please let me know where I'm wrong but I still dont see how this doesn't harm the car.

As long as the oil temp is within operating parameters, it shouldf not harm the engine any more than running it at that RPM on a track. That is actually a real hedge since the oil coolers may run hotter at standstill. You will find the oil temp running up a bit if you sit in traffic.

It is also possible that the engine management computer will think there is a malfucntion and turn on the check engine light.

As was noted previously, the fact that there is post cat combustion means that the cats have been runup past their operating temp specs, which could reduce their life.

Even so, it is a stupid thing to do. The comments about dumb salesman are on target.

I've always thought a continuous rev was a bad idea and is just unnecessary strain on the engine.
    Thanks for the info. :)

Regardless of lasting harm to the engine, this is not the way to treat a fine (and expensive)piece of machinery. And for what? To entertain the web by throwing some sparks out the exhaust?

These cars are not made to be babied, but silly, purposeless demonstrations like this should be condemned.
