"Even though Red Bull has totally dominated the sport on track, it is Ferrari that hauls away the biggest share from F1′s clandestine “prize fund.” Jonathan Noble at Autosport has reported that – based on its independent sources – Ferrari will collect the first 2.5% of the nearly $700 million in F1 prize money this year. That’s over $17 million to a team that won only one race and finished third in the constructors’ championship. According to Noble, this unique bonus is based on Ferrari’s “unrivaled historical contribution, consistent presence and strength of the brand.”

But that’s just the beginning. Noble also reports that Ferrari will get the largest cut of so-called “Category B” entitlements which are based on “world title winning success.” That amounts to another estimated $16 million. Thus, before it will even start testing again, Ferrari has filled its coffers with over $33 million. And it doesn’t end there. By finishing third in the constructor’s championship, Ferrari gets another big payday. By landing in the top three for two of the previous three years, Ferrari collects another $71 million.

When you add it all up, Ferrari will take home over $104 million in 2011. That’s more than both Red Bull and McLaren who finished ahead of it in the season standings. Doing similar calculations, Noble reports that McLaren should collect nearly $85 million while Red Bull will earn a tad over $93 million."

The only reason people think RBR could win 5 WDC's is because we F1 fans have very, very short attention spans and remember only about a weeks worth of history :)

When Renault were doing so well, people predicted it would be years before they were toppled. Same with Brawn - when they won a bunch of the first races people said it was a Ferrari-like era of domination all over again.

I expect RBR to be a strong competitor next year. To maintain the same gap as this year? I don't think so. Fortunes change in F1 quite quickly, and other than Ferrari's dominant years, it's unusual for anyone to be at the top for more than a couple of years.

RBR won't be on top for long. A lot less time than everyone thinks - wait and see.

Isn't it against the Concorde agreement to bring actual numbers up?

Here's why Ferrari gets the lion's share.

If Ferrari quit F1, no one would care about Red Bull winning any championship. Everyone knows it, including and especially Bernie and Ferrari.

    huh?

    Let's start from the back:

    Virgin
    HRT
    Lotus
    Toro Rosso
    Sauber
    Force India
    Williams
    Renault
    ...
    Red Bull

NONE of these teams use the tech from F1 anywhere else.

    OK, the rest:

    Ferrari
    Mercedes
    McLaren

Guess what, these guys don't either, since F1 tech doesn't trickle down.

F1 is a marketing platform. Team Pepsi would fit right in.

+1. Just take a look at the NASCAR field. Soap sponsors, Army, Home-improvement. Man those are glamorous! No one cares when you are winning. Red Bull have a good following of fans and very attractive packaging of its cars and team gear. I guess some folks missed the enormous banner covering a good part of a grandstand in Brazil. Red Bull has conquered F1 and then some. Its a brand known worldwide to say the least.

Ferrari are NO different. They make much more money selling items with a logo than they ever will with cars. Its just how it is.

One day they might leave. NO loss to Red Bull as it is in every other sport known. When in Europe go to Salzburg and see Hangar 7. You will get it then for sure.

Again unreferenced information for the thread - but I believe there is something that is also taken into context how long your operation as it's name has been involved in F1, which is where Ferrari has no direct competitor. From memory this is why there is sometimes new owners keeping old names. For Stoddart it was more viable to retain the Minardi name, and he is a bottom-line guy, so realized that renaming the car at the back of the grid had no financial gain. I believe this may also be why we had cars named by one engine running another etc.

If I was involved in F1 at a management level, I wouldn't be posting this - nor would I be at my machine reading the internets on a lunch break drinking old coffee - so again all guesswork.

Funny and true. Ferrari needs to come up with new cars just so Mattel has a new toy to make them millions. The fact that the real cars actually sell, is an added bonus.

If you've ever been a signatory thereto it sure seems so..... There must be a really heavy "you will never disclose squat about this contract" clause in there - I thought either Stoddart and/or Jordan wouldn't be able to keep quiet for example but no...... ;)

Even though the #'s reported are close to my above guesses (I'm good! ;)) it's the first time I've seem them reported by such a reputable source (Noble has been around a long time) and I guess "hears stuff" in the paddock.

    Hardly the lions share! - Seems they get 2.5% right off the top and the article quoted above goes on to say Horner and the others are quite happy about that for the reasons you state;

If Noble is correct, and it certainly ties in with other informed "guesses" over the years, they got just a tad more than the other two by virtue of their finishing positions over the past three seasons. It looks to me that *if* RBR wins again and Ferrari are once again 3rd the biggest payout would then go to RBR for example.

    Cheers,
    Ian
