I always find it intriguing to read these reports, aside from the human tragedy. It is so easy to play armchair quarterback, and ask questions. Regarding spatial disorientation, it would be awesome if you could hit a button and the auto pilot would kick in, but I assume that by the time you think to do that, and even if you did think to do that, the plane would be too far out of shape for that to work. Our friend Austin of www.x-plane.com is working on a one button solution that will land a plane in the event of pilot incapacitation. I did note that at least one CAPs pull was due to a passenger activation due to a previously undiagnosed brain tumor in the pilot.

Per Avionics magazine it already exists and is testing for biz jets at this time... of course someone on board would need to have the ability to "push the button". Next will be systems that watch to make sure you are not outside of a flight envelope or check on you every 30 minutes, then the system could take corrective action. Next will be unmanned cockpits....

I just saw a doctor on the news state that more people are getting cancer becasue we "live too long"... like Mom used to say, damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Interesting story. Sounds like "too slow" base to final.
