In England it's basically the equivalent of the USA's middle finger gesture.

Be careful not to use it in a Pub when ordering two pints. You have to reverse the gesture with the palm out, or you may just start a brawl.

^^ that's not right....in the movie he was in friendly competition with the Ferrari driver, not flipping him off

Not to mention he's an American driver, and the Ferrari driver was a German, no UK connection there.

i use to think it was "V" for victory, but then his hand would be turned the opposite direction (inside of palm, not back of hand)

in the film, he (delaney) motions the gesture a couple of times to (stahler), and in reply the stahler nodes with somewhat respect/approval

My 7th grade teacher was married to a brit.

He said that the two finger salute originates from the days of english archers who, when captured by their foe, would be punished by having those two fingers cut off.

The archers who still had both fingers would show them to their foe during battle.

Fairly certain McQueen is asking if his rival is racing a Deux Chevaux.

it is an interesting one, which i hadn't heard before......it would be great to learn of some interview or quote that could confirm, either by mcqueen, or another person linked to the film?

    Cool.

Blood on the nose indicates he was having difficulty with the unaided cliff diving scene in Papillion.

Stunt men can be so recalcitrant..;).

LOL yes, he did a lot of his own stunts too

...still searching for some more definitive proof of what intended meaning was, or what they/mcqueen thought or intended it mean?

Steve's character may have "outwardly" given the gesture, but the body language, a bit of a smile and spirit of commaradary amongst fierce competitors, at least for me, both knew it was just the opposite, it was sarcasm.. doing one thing, that both parties knowing that it meant the opposite...Not so much "F*ck you" but yah man it was a great race and you put up a good fight and I respect you for it. These fingers only show respect for a job well done as they understand each others natures.
