Steve, that is a very apt way of putting it.

I'm glad the storm is over though, the sunshine today was incredibly enjoyable. There's little to beat a 308 on full song on a mountain road.

The thread was beautiful to me because it showed clearly what kind of comradery is present in this group, truly fantastic.

A big THANK YOU to all contributors!

    Jack.

Great to hear you have solved it . Sad to see it go , it was a great example .
Maybe we can still go for a blast when the Maser is sorted ?

I'm still not clear why it would move in reverse but no forwards gears? Was it earthing problems to the transmission? Fuel pressure? (why would that have such an effect?)

Perhaps the short of the reverse wire was negated by the reverse switch being activated. i.e. the current followed the least path of resistance thru the reverse light circuit rather then an intermittent short with the chassis?

Thanks for posting up your findings. I'm glad you were able to solve this problem and that everything turned out well in the end! Congrats on the new "toy"! What year/model of Maserati?

    Jack,

Glad to hear you've got it solved, and interesting solution to the problem. It goes back to one of the basic principles of old car repair -- most electrical problems can be traced back to a faulty ground. Nice that the Bosch people were able to sort it out so quickly and relatively easily. Sorry to hear that you sold her, after all you've been through getting her right, but sounds like you've got a good replacement to enjoy.

    All the best!!!

    To conclude:

It was a combined problem of old gas, too low fuel pressure and 2 electrical faults.

Hi Jack I have been trying to contact you. My Merc has exactly the same problem! Will it be possible to tell me more about how you fixed it? I read and reread your post on the solution but I am still not able to find the faulty ground wire? I will appreciate it tremendously! Than you very much.
