It's in my top 15. I think I want to own just about every homologation rally car, but the R5 is definitely one of my favorites, and has been since I was about 5 years old.

I foolishly balked at the opportunity of buying a near perfect one. Stilll kicking myself over it.

These cars are insane......maybe a little of an acquired taste but oh so cool.

I was at the RM Amelia Island auction this year and there was an RS200 Evo, I was fortunate enough to get it. Not ten seconds after the auction a really cool collector out of Los Angeles approached me, his tastes are as ecclectic as mine and he asked if I wanted an R5 Turbo to compliment the RS200.

The owner is known for having some of the best examples extant. I expressed an interest but I did not know enough to immediately pull the trigger. The car sold by the time I got home and boy do I wish I had done my homework, these are crazy little cars.

It really is amazing at how each manufacturer come up with a solution for going fast. Long live the R5!!!!

I love them! I remember back in the day it was either that or a Shelby GLHS!

I love these cars so much. They are like an older version of the Clio Sport V6, one of my favorite cars.

the RS200 is an amazing car, congrats on the buy :) ....and you were able to bring it into Canada? kool!

the R5 turbo is certainly ugly enough to be cool somehow LOL ....i don't know if could be road legal here, but given it's age maybe that's a non-issue now?

Would have been an awesome pair together.
I would love to see your RS200. What part of Alberta are you in?

i bought one from peter shomere (sp?) in jensen beach, fl back in 1985. it was the 260 hp engine option and had what they called the devil exhaust...also had gotti's.

i bought it under the one time exemption back in the day. it was a cool car but the turbo 2 was not as exotic as the turbo 1.

i was going to ask why, then re-read this:
makes sense now, so the turbo 1 were the homologation versions, with all the good "go fast" bits.....and the turbo 2 were more for market

i wonder what the weight difference was between them?

it's funny you guys should have brought up dodge turbos.....i actually got hold of 2 lecars (free) and had the idea of building a R5 turbo, make fiberglass fenders, and use a dodge turbo drivetrain in the back.....never did do it, but still was a kool idea :D

more i think about it, i'd move an authentic R5 turbo 1 or maxi into my top 20 list!! :D

I had no idea that Gandini had a hand in that car....I think he's brilliant...btw the R5 Turbo is w/o doubt one of my top 25 cars and I'd LOVE to have one.

Had one for about 6 months. Probaly best suspension and steering of any road car I have driven, it had compliance and directness of a race car. The motor was either on or off, when the boost came in it was like a superbike, otherwise it was like a slug. Which meant there was little modulation and on the twisties you were going like a 16 year old all the time. I could see the accident comming, that, the tinney doors crappy interior and general feeling of cheapness coupled with not inconsiderate maintainance isuues meant we parted.

Would love a rs 200 though hard to find a good one..

fantastic :) ...looks like you also have a 944 (maybe 951) i had one, and remains a favorite also

the renault original design idea was to have a V6, but i don't know if the car would feel as good handling with the additional weight? mind you, a V6 turbo R5 would be quite a car, perhaps more 'drivable' even (not so on-off as mentioned)

The car is in Calgary, good old cow town. I'd love to see a sandwich with a red Lancia 037 Stradale and a red R5 and the RS200 in the middle.
