The horn button pulls right off, just pop a small flat screwdriver under the lip and off she comes. The rubber pad also comes right off, it's just attached around the edges via a rubber lip. I'll attach a picture from a "horny" old thread from 2005.

At some point, I have a feeling that something went awry in this area and put the trigger circuit into a permanent ground condition. Your experiment with the new relay proves that it's still grounded all the time, although it should only be grounded when the button (either the center one or the spokes ones) is pressed. If I'm right, the original compressor would have kept blowing (or trying to blow) until it seized and blew the fuse.

For now, if you don't spot an obvious problem, I would suggest that you leave the horn relay unplugged, just in case the problem causes your fuse/relay panel to overheat and cause some additional troubles to arise.

Don't panic, this won't be too tough to fix.
