Found this in my 99 355F1 GTS when I bought it. No idea what its for? Anyone? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Plugs into the cigarette lighter and MAYBE an aux receptical under your dash. It is a "trouble light" that replaces the need for a flash light that is never carried or has 5-year old batteries in it. IF you also have the plastic pouch for it, they can be worth a few racks of beer.
I have found this to be quite handy when dropped screws are hunted for, also the cord is long enough to get to the engine compartment at night. The receptacle for the 308 is under the dash on the left hand side, it appears different then a cig plug.
Quite a valuable item amongst the Concours crowd. Not having one costs you. Finding a replacement if yours has gone missing also costs you. Quite a bit, usually.
When I bought my 328 from JayO he said this was the only missing item from the tool kit. Wonderful suprise when I found mine just last night stuffed into the dark recesses of the jack bag. Kinda scared to plug it in as it looks totally original including the 24 year old light bulb inside. The bulb looks good, but who knows what it will do when put to the test. Guess there's only one way to find out
Saw this thread and checked out my jack bag. Sure enough, there it was in a little pouch! Never would have even known to look. Plugged it in and it worked fine. Probably won't ever use it but it's cool to see I have one.
Not on most of the older cars they aren't. Oh and as for price, these go pretty regularly on eBay for wildly differing prices from $80-$100 and up.
I bought mine from Ebay as well, but not for that much I think. Anyway, I wonder is it was an optional item or not for a 1978 308? My car was very complete when I bought it, including all books and tools and even the warning triangle and emergency window crank, but not this light.
seems, as if it was standard equipment. At least you can find it in the parts book of 1980 GTB/GTS on Tav. 115 and already in the GTB parts book from 1976 on Tav. 165. I also had to buy it later on ebay, but it was just EUR 25,--. Best Regards from Germany Martin

It's worth noting that the design of the plug seems to have changed a little at some time. My '84 308 has the smaller plug that only fits in the special port under the small storage shelf by the drivers door. This one in eBay seems to to have a standard cigarette lighter plug. So it wouldn't be exactly original for earlier cars. I think my friends 328 has the smaller power port as well - maybe they eliminated that with the 348?
