Wow, I had to check to make sure I wasn't on the Viper board. Interesting thread. I guess these types of threads are common everywhere. If it is not the Corvette Forum and the Mustang guys it is the Viper and the Vette guys or in this case the Ferrari and NSX guys. Crazy.

And from an outsiders point of view I too think the NSX and 360 are in the same league for what it is worth. I have been reading this forum/thread since I have had been thinking about getting either a 430 or G recently. Probably won't happen as I am a hard core american muscle type of guy and always have been but you never know. If anybody is interested I have a Callaway Z06 SC652 and a Viper GTS now but have a few friends with different exotics and am around a lot of exotics and different cars from hanging around at the local C&C. I love all cars be it american, exotic or even old british cars or ricers. I have to say though, there is just something special about the Ferrari's exhaust note which is probably the main thing that attracts me to them. JMHO.

I'm interested in knowing why someone feels better nsx and 360 are in same league. That boggles my mind

All of the answers I've seen so far are pretty much ego driven...

It seems that some Ferrari guys feel that Ferrari's are in a league of their own. That may be very well true. That is not to say that they are any better or worst than a NSX or a Lambo just that they are different!

everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but the nsx was really made to compete with the 348. once the 355 came out and trounced everything they bumped the power in '97 and added a 6th cog. gave the car some great street credit high 4 sec 0-60 time, low 13 sec 1/4 mile time and a 175mph top end.

360 came out and pretty much obliterated it in every aspect. so the two really aren't in the same league. This has nothing to do with brands, just what they are made to compete with. I would never say a ferrari 328 is in the same league as an nsx, because it isn't.

just my 2 cents. damn this thread really got off track fast.

Using that logic, the 360 is not in the same league as a 2011 Mustang.

I thought that stuff was behind this thread but obviously not...

F1-360 -Wiki page as reference article
    360 0-60 mph (97 km/h): 4.3 s
    Top speed: 186 mph
    Standing 1/4 Mile: 12.8

NSX 3.2 Car and driver driver magazine as reference article
60 mph in 4.8 seconds, covered the quarter-mile in 13.2 at 106 mph

so 0-60 in a half a second difference and traveling the 1/4 the same half second faster means it was obliterated?

I refer back to the Nürburgring both the 360CS and NSX-R did it in 7:56 if you're going to talk about performance numbers being your basis for using the term "OBLITERATED" please back them up with actual data. the Ferrari 355GTB shows a 8:13 ring time. at the time the 3.0 NSX-R did it in 8:16 a 3 second difference

Even the F430 did the ring in 7:55 and a 2008 GT-R did it in 7:54. (yes I used GT-R b/c someone else brought that in)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N%C3%BCrburgring_Nordschleife_lap_times

So the 360 is currently a Mid Level and always was a Mid Level Exotic. The 360 was never top of the line and I am not bashing it. But for the group of you who looks at a car that is at MINIMUM 7 years old like its so much better than another car from circa 1999-2005 then I wish you all the joy in the world with your 360. Again this was never intended to turn into what it did, I at some point with the BS in the thread feel like I should have reference my old Honda Accord instead of the NSX but whatever. This thread was supposed to be about reliability and has turned into a handful of elitists trying to think their 7-13 year old car is beyond the league of another car in equal range but cannot back it up by anything other than egotistical reasons how its not in the same league.

    ----------

And if I or anyone else here referenced their NSX as if they thought it was a GT-R please show me as I missed that reply

To each his own. To be perfectly honest, I personally don't care about figures that will only be realized on the track with tweaked cars by the manufacturer. A tweaked WRX will smoke my 360. I don't care. I'll admit the status symbol aspect of the car is a component of ownership that is part of FCar ownership. The car is a symbol in our society.
Japanese cars don't do it for me... I'm biased. American Muscle, meh. It might be potent, but every redneck in my hometown, current town, any town, has one. Again, I'm biased.

I bought my 360 because of what it is, every bit of it. The responses to it when I'm out in it.. that's enough.. if you don't "get it", you won't. Making disparaging comments about the car, coming from an WRX, NSX or Corvette will appear as it appears.

You know maybe that's the ultimate message I've sought with my car.. when I'm driving it maybe it says, "My days of being beholden to others are over.. I just don't care what you think me". And in the end I don't. :)

And yes.. I thinking rehashing this in the tech section.. let me think of how to best structure that post.

This isn't about performance . All the v8 are Ferrari entry level car just as the Gallardo is for Lambo. Let's not over that also that NSX isn't an exotic nor do people react to it the way they do to Ferrari or Lambo .

I have nothing against NSX Corvette( plan to add one)

    Very well phrased.. I previously owned M-cars, 997TT, 04 360, 05 430 coupe, 06 spider and finally 07 lp640 (in Istanbul)

I want to go for 458 spider next, i simply can not afford one this year, because of the new adjustment on "private cons. Tax"
The spider is around 600+ k euros (around 800 thousand dollars), and I sold the 640 for around 300 eur which is less then half the price of the new spider here

All that being said, your comments about owners of different brands, I observe the same %100

My solution to this is, for a period of time, buy 2nd hand different brand's well liked cars, try to understand what they are proposing.. Claim the rights to make comment on them by simply owning them.. I advise the same to my friends with GTR s and Vettes who are obsessed with their rides. You are not the owner of the brand, no need to defend them :)

Claim the rights to make comments on them by simply owning them.. By this time you also get more mature on your journey and somepoint you know what is really manufactured for you

i.e the lp640 was a great poser and one of 5 here, felt like Bruce Wayne for a while.. yet I loved the corsa/tan 06 spider much more and can not stop missing it :)

    Sorry for the poor english

The NSX was a cool car in it's time but now has very limited appeal. IMO, it does not have the lasting and timeless beauty/ appeal of any Ferrari let alone a 360. There will always be a faster car out there, heck I could have bought a used ZR1 for roughly the same price as my 360 and although it is an incredible car it did not have the same appeal.

Comparing cars is like comparing a high class hooker against a high class escort. In the end, they'll both satisfy you just as well depending on how much you're willing to spend! Question is, are you willing to marry one or the other. That my friends, is where brand loyalty comes in. Eventually though, one will have to be replaced by the latest runway model!!!

There's a couple of 03 360 Spiders for sale in UK that I'm looking at. Both have around 40,000 miles on the clock. Any tips from you guys on what to look for in addition to what was discussed here and in the main topic on buying a 360?

From my perspective I would have absolutely no problem buying a car with this mileage (as I did so myself without any problems).

Avoid a car with electrical problems / CEL light showing unless it's priced well down or warranted as regards pre-sale repairs and warranty.
How long since last clutch change?
How long since last belt change?
Neither of above should be a problem, just need to price accordingly.
Discs worn? Check for lip around edge of discs - cost circa £105+V UK per corner - easy to fit if you're any way DIY capable, not expensive in terms of time if not.
Suspension components wear out - lower ball-joints front particularly, followed by upper also on front. Same components exist on rear but do not wear out so fast.
Other components also wear, bushings which hold the suspension arms to the chassis are a wearing item but do last a long time. The main gearbox mount (on top) is subject to wear and may need replacement - a tell-tale will be exhaust tips which are lower than centered in the outlets.
Might be nice to get a car already equipped with a Tubi / Capriso / Other replacement silencer.
Be aware that cars with cats removed can sound absolutely fantastic but might be hard to live with.
Check out roof operation - problems can occur (although they don't seem to be particularly common) and can be difficult and expensive to resolve.
F1 will generally be more problematic and expensive in the long run than manual.
Don't pay extra for after-market extras. They rarely add value and are subject to personal taste. Exceptions to this rule would be CS Mirrors, CS Wheels.

I reckon a car with 40k after 9 years has probably been used sufficiently to keep it in good order and might well be a better buy (in terms of possible gremlins) than a garage queen.

Take your time, avoid being sucked in to the first one you see in your colour and enjoy.

Its pretty well covered in the buying guide.

I would say general maintenance records like belt changes, yearly maintenances, clutch, spark plugs etc. tell a lot of a car and how it has been maintained.
I would assume nothing special for that mileage for a well kept car.
Mine is a 2001 , 6 speed gated and has about 35tmls now (55000kms). We just renewed the clutch with all components (clutch was original).

360:s are prone to leaks in the valve cover area and the RMS (rear main seal) seem to be the leaky spots (as was the case in mine with the RMS).
You would really need to remove the bottom pan to see everything properly.

The two responses above pretty much address most of the issues.

I bought mine with 50k miles on the clock year and a half ago... and I can't be happier.

In the US, everyone wants a 1 owner car, that has been loved with less than 10k miles on it.. that has been driven regularly. Higher milage cars with more than 1-2 owners are fine cars, just like any other Porsche, Audi, etc. The difference is that when a car gets sold, the 1 owner car MAY have had the upgrades/campaigns done (always check), or may not. If the car has been for sale a few times, the chances that someone has said "I'm not buying this unless a major is done" or "has the campaigns been performed" is also greater. Assuming that the Ferrari buyer is informed as most are before they spend that kind of money.
Thus I argue that cars with more miles and owners are also more likely to have campaigns and majors done in the past. High mileage/km cars can be just as reliable as any other car.

Price accordingly by what the PPI shows, and any possible deficits the car may have. Examples that have been "monkeyed with" esp. by mechanics that don't work on ferrari's or are ham fisted, can be expensive to bring back to good condition. Look for electrical tape under the dash or dramatically modified condition. from my experience, if it's driven regularly it will probably be more reliable with less seals leaking.
Do you plan on working on the car yourself? Or will it be brought to a mechanic/dealership for most of any work done?

Thanks for your responses guys, I will definitely include the rotors/pads, ball joints, roof operation and valve cover area/RMS into the list of things for the mechanic to check when doing a PPI.
Unfortunately can't purchase a car with an aftermarket exhaust unless it comes with a stock one as well - according to the ridiculous Australian rules the car you're importing must have original parts fitted for compliance reasons.
I'm not a mechanically savvy guy, will be bringing the car to a mechanic for most of work.
The cars I'm looking at had 3-4 owners, good chance the campaigns have been addressed, but will check the VIN of the car I choose for any missing campaigns at the local Ferrari dealer.

Hey mate - not sure where you are in OZ- I'm in Brizzie and have a 360 with standard exhaust. If you import one with a Tubi or similar and want to get it through Compliance, I'd be happy to lend you my standard exhaust system so you can get it passed - then fit the after market one. PM me if I can be of assistance.
