It used to be a rule of thumb that if the odometer digits didnt line up the mileage was suspect. Not sure if this still applies with the type of electro-mechanical units on these cars though. Maybe that was only the old mechanical type. Any thoughts?

You can see from the cam cover it's a 2V engine.

    Great catches here, guys!

Definitely not a QV. Mileage is suspect. GTSi yes...QV no.

    1982...no QV.

I totally agree..........Definitely not a QV. In the description, the seller states:

"On Jan-22-12 at 14:05:42 PST, seller added the following information:

If you take a close look at the 5th picture you may see QUATROVALVE on in, back side, underneath of the ligths. I checked wikipedia and says this Ferrari 1982 308 GTS was build with 4 valve. I will add some pictures of it."

The seller has a 100% Ebay positive feedback of 944. He's probably not misrepresenting on purpose. However, it appears that he's not a Ferrari enthusiast, and he really doesn't know much about what he has. Someone stuck the QV emblem on it and therefore he's convinced.

Hopefully, the person that ends up buying it will do some research on their own, and should know exactly what they are purchasing.

As for the mileage........I personally would be real leery about that as well.

The car looks nice at a distance and from what you can see in the pics. However, looking at some of the details......there are a few things that jump out at me, if I was considering this car: non original side view mirrors, no radio and no delete plate (open hole where it should be), leather on the seats are dried out and "tight", leather speaker "grilles" missing? (Is that the actual speaker cone that you can see in the pic?), ashtray cover emblem broken, tire in the pic looks a bit worn down for such low mileage, front bumper on the passenger's side looks "bent down" a bit, someone added a prancing horse emblem to the front grille and painted everything black, space saver spare tire?....I thought these came with full size spare? Maybe because it's a Euro? Also, is it missing the valance around the exhaust tips? Or did the Euro not have it?

I'm no expert........but those are the things that I noted.

...the red lettering in the ebay description calls it a "208".

    Somebody not paying attention...

Looks like a quality respray or original paint thought, IMHO.

Is this car a 208?? Are there any immediate visual differences to tell between a 208 and 308? I have no idea. Maybe the experts can chime in......

Seconded. It's very similar to my 82 2V Euro. I would think it has a similar history as mine - grey-market import back when it was new and modified (minimally) by that importer to meet whatever regulations were in effect. So you see the US-style side markers for example, but they seemingly got away with the Euro bumpers. Note also the instrument cluster. It's all metric except for the speedo. And if the speedo/odo is anything like mine, the importer switched the face of the speedo to mph, but kept the factory odo which racks up kilometers, not miles. Which is even more reason to suspect the mileage here. Other clue to me is the wear on the driver seat. Maybe just a low-res pic, but it seems to me that the pattern in the bottom cushion is flattened, presumably because somebody sat there for a long, long time...

    Funny. he copied this:

"but could be recognised by the addition of a slim louvre panel in the front lid to aid radiator exhaust air exit"

from wiki but doesn´t realize this car doesn´t have that.

According to wikipedia they did and wikipedia information is always 100% accuate. So much so that when something is posted on there, history will actually change to make the statement true.

My odo was changed but at least I have a history and can see when it was swapped out because it failed. And luckily I have a pretty good record of mileage from the old MOT (UK roadworthiness test) certificates where the (non-mandatory at the time) field was diligently filled by the inspectors.

The UK MOT record of mileage definitely helps because it prevents clock winding-back to a large extent. It doesnt guard against an unscruplous owner disabling the speedo for 9 months of every year though!
When I was looking at cars on the market last year, I viewed one which has done 3 miles in one year, according to the MOTs. Which was interesting as the MOT stations were located in towns 20 miles apart. Well I suppose it could have been trailered to the test!

    1982 Euro 308QV exist (as do 1982 Euro 308i 2-valve); 1982 US 308QV do not.

Obviously, it's a 2-valve engine in the car, but the VIN also decodes as a Euro 2-valve 308i ("H" in the fourth digit -- if it was originally a Euro 308QV and had the engine changed, the fourth digit would be "L").

Yes but very very few. It was a big R&D year for the final touches on QV model so there were prototypes and a few road versions built. That's why you will often see QV's production years published as 82-85 but for all practical purposes it was really 83-85.

:D im sure Ferrari has had a higher percentage of replaced speedos and disconnected cables moreso than any other marque! :D
My experience were cars from the mid/late 90's

But im not put off by it, tho. The mileage is what it says until someone proves different.
Lo miles, or high miles....your still putting money into a Ferrari!

Jmo, -For drivers this old, condition trumps mileage.....trumps originality, too.

Lotsa Ferrari's are over emblemed as well
Pretty nice looking 308, but I laugh sometimes when sellers feel they have to give a history of the model.
If you found it, you know what a 308 is!

I emailed the seller last nite & explained to him from the VIN, he has a 2 valve Euro. I also suggested he change the ad in lieu of misrepresentation. Also, remove the quatrovalvole badge on the tail.
