I posted this in the super car section and did not get a response. Thought I might try here.

On a 92 USA F40, where is the fuel sending unit. I have been through the parts diagrams (multiple versions) and have looked through the engine bay and through the rear firewall (cover removed obviously). Even fished in an inspection camera.

I still cannot fine the fuel sender on the LHS tank. Is it imbeded in the LHS fuel tank pump assembly. The parts diagram indicates a second hole in the tank for the sender more toward the body/outside of the car near the fuel filler to tank hose. But for the life of me I can't find the darn thing.

    Going blind I guess.

    Appreciate any advise.

Are you saying that you can't physically find item 7 ("fuel level") in this SPC illusration on your F40?

    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&P=&V=diag&I=1555

It looks like the LHS fuel filler hose passes directly over it so might be sort of underneath that. Also. if your tanks are coated with some sort of textured spray insulation, they might have sprayed right over it so you'd have to "dig" it out (although there should still be a wire or two attached to it) -- just a thought. Can you post a photo of that area?

    Steve - exactly.

When I remove and rear bulkhead to access the front of the engine I can see the in tank fuel pump but not the fuel sender #7. You are right the fill hose might be passing directly over the sending unit. There are several versions and several diagrams of the the fuel system. I suspect I have the one you linked in the post but cannot see it or find the wires leading to it.

I suspect the unit is accessed by removing the LHS rear wheel well that covers that area and which hopefully provides access to the fuel tank and sending unit.

I was hoping that someone could verify that this was the way to access it (wheel well removal - more involved on F40 that other cars) before I proceeded as there is no way to even take a good picture from the rear bulkhead end. Its burried too far rearward and bodyside.

Thougt I would finish the thread.

The fuel sender is located as above. You have to remove the left rear wheel then the under side pannel to gain access to the fuel tank. Not very hard. The sender is a little difficult to get out. I removed the filler hose and spout. It takes a 2 inch socket to remove it and even if I had one that large it would have to be very thin walled. I ended up grinding down an old large wrench to fit. Came out without any trouble.

    Waiting for the part now.
