This is one of only 357 L series Dinos built by Scaglietti with a steel body and aluminum skins. This car was a complete running/driving rust free car when I sold it to a body shop owner a few years ago. As you can see from the photos the body and most of the paint work has been done. The wheels have been painted and new tires installed and I replaced the wheel nuts with new ones when I got the car back. All of the interior except carpets have been done with the correct Dino vinyl except the seats are now in leather. The headliner is installed. As far as I can tell all of the parts are with the car except one roof drip trim that was discarded by a thoughtless worker as the car was being painted. It had an incorrect front batchboard and it has been replaced with a repainted original. I had the column switch rebuilt as new are no longer available. There are a few things like the steering wheel, bumpers and shift knob that are from a later version Dinos. The rubber, door, trunk seals ect. will all have to be replaced except front and rear glass seals which are new. This car is subject to prior sale and we reserve the right to end the auction as long there is no bid. Any other thoughts on this car? I have some serious interest, but the current bid of 83k seems near the top for a Dino needing substantial restoration. I'm not real familiar with the different variants, but is the market for an early knockoff 246 that much higher?
Call bradan in NJ and see what it would take to finish. That would be my best advice. Then you know what its going to take to finish it and what its worth...
Seems to me 80-100k to restore this car to a platinium level. We've allready finished restoration of 00636 some time ago so I know a little which work has to be done to bring this car back to life.
Thanks Drew, I've been following your restoration with great interest, looks like they are doing a fantastic job! Just curious, is yours their first Dino? Love the level of detail they are sharing, good to see.
I'm happy to see this thread. The Dinos are very attractive, with the coupes prettier IMO. Having seen what is under the skin on Daytonas, Boxers and Dinos, I would have serious reservations about moving forward on this restoration. It seems to me the purchaser should move back. What is in the fourth picture that looks like rust on the piece between the engine bay and the trunk? It looks to be rusted through. If it is and we can see it, you just have to know what we can't see.
I think you're just seeing surface rust and the last bit of black paint on that panel. When there's surface rust it starts on the edges, so the centers are the last to retain paint. It looks ok to me. My bigger question is why would someone spend all that time and money on body and paint, and not restore the rest of the chassis? It looks like a surface job that's going to have to come apart again, and now it will be a pain to avoid damaging all that new paint.
I was the high bidder as Dennis ended the listing after I asked him some questions regarding the number of the engine block and the story about the different VIN's of the car - look at dinoregister.com regarding 00522 and 00868. I was warned by one fellow of FChat to have a deeper look on that. Does anybody know more about this car resp. these cars?
My impression is that buying a car in this shape only makes sense if you can do the work yourself and enjoy doing it. If you have to pay someone $100 per hour you will never come close to breaking even. Do people agree with that?
