    Thanks Cliff

Update: The car's been sitting for almost 2 months without the battery tender connected and tonight she started right up; just like it's brand new.

Thanks to all of those who helped...

Turns out that the solenoid on the new aftermarket starter was bad (like some here and others suggested). After I rebuilt it with the kit supplied by the vendor the car cranks every time... for the past three months... without using the trickle charger at all.

I hit the intermittent no start issue tonight on my Mondial 8 after 30 min drive home-- washed it and about 30 min after shutdown turn key hear fuel pump but no crank. Bypass crank switch give same result.
Wait 30 more minutes and starts fine.
I suspect something with the starter or solenoid in uneven cooling after hot run.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. I have been plagued by this same problem throughout my 7 year ownership of my 1990 Mondial t and have reached the "acceptance" stage. I've been coping with it by never expecting to restart the car before an hour in cold weather or parking on an incline to roll start during the warm season (which is most of the time).

The issue has been addressed at three previous servical intervals with variable latency before returning back to baseline. It will be high on the list during the major service this Spring (between belt service and stretching a new top) but I almost expect the problem to return as it likely more than a single point of failure as this thread suggests.

Again, thanks for the information. Its nice to know that maybe one day my car can be cured of this common problem which I currently tell (BS) friends could be fixed by a bypass switch but would ruin the car's "originallity"

Figured out what was causing my intermitent start on my Mondial...After I changed the starter and battery of course...Turned out to be the engine possitive cable disconnect. Big red plastic disconnect...anyway, was worn, burnt and the springs that hold the contcts against each other had lost the "spring" do to the heat so whenever the engine would get hot or vibrate or hit a bump.or if mars lined up with jupiter just right the darn thing wouldnt start.

Replaced the 120A connector for a heaftier 180A and all the gremlins died. Bought extras if anyone needs them, I don't know why they didn't put this item in the replacement category like when you change your timing belts or something. Everyone I've taled to seems to have the same problem at some point and those who don't yet have the problem say theirs is falling apart from heat.
Anyway, I'm sure it's not the magic bullet fix all intermitent start conditions but if you have one, I would recomend replacing it, fairly cheap and simple upgrade and it's one less headache I have to deal with...
All that said, turns out there was nothing wrong with my new/Rebuilt starter. I bought one of those miniature ones so if anyone wants to buy my barely used OEM starter let me know, shoeld fit Mondial8, 308's and anyone else using engine 105a or 106a
