Matte Paint

Gloss has been around for over 100 years and will not go away in our lifetime. Matte is just such a PITA to own and take care of in the long-term, many potential buyers will simply refuse to own a car with that type of paint. There is resale Red, and maybe depreciation Dull?

IMO it only looks good under the lights of a studio or showroom. It photographs well, but keeping it in that condition seems nigh on impossible if the car is actually driven.

I would suspect that many cars ordered with Matte today will be repainted gloss at some future date. On the upside anyone willing to tolerate the headaches and keeps their car with the dull finish will end up with a car that is ever more rare as others are repainted.

Of course Verde Pisello is pretty rare too, and I doubt any car in that color would be worth as much as a regular red or black car.

 

Never cared for the look until I saw this Maserati at the Bologna Auto show in 2010.

I don't care for the matte finish. In general I'm not a fan of black wheels either but they look alright on some cars.

 

If she's matte black, I could learn to care for the look.

 

I think matte COLORS are a fad. I love matte black on an exotic because I think it's a statement on the owner's attitude. It's a gritty look compared to those with eight coats of wax at the local C&C and no dust or dirt.

 

It will be a fad just like the matte paint on car hoods ca. 1974.

There is a Matte Black CLS I see here periodically. Looks like crap.

A neighbor has a tricked out Jeep with Matte Black paint... looks fantastic.

 

Dust or dirt is more authentic. I'm sure the guy with the matte black Gallardo/etc. cleans it regularly.

Carbon fibre is the replacement fad for those matte painted hoods.

 

I disagree that dark cars may benefit generally from matte. The darker the color the more critical reflected light is to define curves and angles. Matte has its place but needs really bright light. However I am a fan of matte wheels whether silver or black. Chrome is usually too much but nice if used sparingly on wheel accents. The whole “stealth” look is dated but looks wicked when done right.
One happy medium I LOVE is pearl or chameleon. High gloss with undertones of metallic matte sparkle & a 2nd, 3rd color shift. Yet one more expensive but striking option.
