I'm in for a set. Does anyone have a suggestion for a proper glue to use that will hold but not damage the paint on the badge?
Just an update. The tool has been paid for some time now and I am just waiting on a first sample for approval. Anyone who has shown interest will be contacted once I am sure that the parts produced are perfect. Also shipping to anywhere in the world will not be a problem
Update time. I have received my first samples and they are very good but not 'quite' the way I want them. As such the manufacturer is making some tweeks to the design to really make them spot on. The real issue now stems around colour (Canadian spelling). I have a whole pile of OEM caps to choose the colour off of and if you are insanely picky, no two are the same. Obviously sun fading is an issue but also the black glue that was used to affix the caps to the stainless hub centers leaches into the yellow affecting its colour over time. Moreover it appears as though the manufacturer just was not hugely careful in mixing the colour when the caps were made and figured that yellow is yellow and blue is blue. In order to break the log jamb, I'm going to choose the cap that I have that is the most consistent to all the others and then take it to at least 3 colour experts to come up with their Pantone equivalent and hope that they all come up with the same colour number. I must say that I am seeing yellow discs in my sleep. At least it looks like we'll all have caps for summer.
When Ferrari originally commissioned the caps, wouldn't they have specified the same colour as the official Ferrari yellow? It's pantone process yellow.
Apologies if this has been covered before, but it's very relevant to this thread. For all of us that would be replacing worn and tattered wheel caps with new, what is the appropriate way to remove the old ones without damaging the stainless hub centers? And then what is the proper adhesive to be used for attaching the new ones once they're available? Better yet, it would be perfect if someone could document the process with their helps and hints and lots of photos.
Ron your questions were answered in posts 5-8 of this thread when you asked the same question back then. As for adhesive we are looking into offering the caps with a thin 3M 2 sided tape pre applied to the caps. This is still a maybe but the finished caps will come with detailed instructions on the removal, prep, and re-installation.
George it is obvious that you have spent no time dealing with the Italians particularily those in the early 1970's In those times there was no 'official' yellow and even if there was, no sub contracter would have been held to it. If it looked yellow enough then it was ok for Ferrari. Remember that with a Ferrari you buy the engine and get the rest of the car for free. This is in evidence as all of the mechanical parts are quite nice and the body, trim, interior and fittings are a mess by comparision. Lastly 'Pantone' is a standardized colour system. Within that system there are dozens of yellows to choose from. If only it were so easy to have one yellow to choose from.
Rob, Coming in late but if you need any more "B" style for reference then I'm happy to lend a new one. These appear to be from later production looking at the packaging. I'll take a set too. Andrew Image Unavailable, Please Login
Andrew I think we are good for originals and thank you for offering. Today we spent time working on the best Pantone colour match. Really it is a crazy exercise because all of the original OEM caps you see on the table that we had to choose from were different so our conclusion is that there is no one right yellow. This theory was confirmed to us by a friend who is a current supplier to Ferrari and he told us that there is no one spec for yellow that Ferrari has and this is in 2012! Imagine back in 1971?!!!?? We are lucky the caps are even round let alone all the same colour. Image Unavailable, Please Login
So based on this conclusion, any idea when you'll begin `stamping' these out? I actually got dinged at a Concours last Aug for my scuffed Dino wheel hub caps, so I'm anxious to a set.
Manufacturing update: A number of people asked about installing these caps and I am pleased to announce that I have been able to sort out the inclusion of pre-applied die cut 3M adhesive tape to the finished wheel caps. The original caps were glued on using a black or tan goop from the factory which was both sloppy and not all that easy to do. Also the glue would separate the colour from the plastic lens making them look un-even. I held out for the extra expense of genuine 3M tape rather than a generic brand to ensure that we have no run away Dino caps. Still waiting on updated samples but I thought I would pass along the news.
The update is that there is no update. I'm waiting on the updated samples and the plan is still to have these ready for this summer.
