I know there's been a lot of debate on here regarding the oil in older model Ferrari's.
I have 4 different cars that ALL the handbooks say AGIP SINT 2000 10w-40. (including the F40). I asked Joe Sackey in the usa about this and his answer basically was that a lot of guys in the USA are still using AGIP.
(I've also come across a high performance engine builder who has had PROBLEMS with Penrite.) So I guess I've sort of opened a can of worms.
But, here's the deal.......AGIP in Australia is almost impossible to get. I've discovered a supplier in USA who can supply me with AGIP and at this stage it looks like it's around $65 for 10 litres. It's not the price I'm concerned about, although if that's right........hell it's cheap compared with what we pay over here.
So I'm going to bring in around 20 litres and see how we go.

ps. I've been using AGIP in my 308 for 30 years and I've been using AGIP in the BOXER for 15 years and have NO problems with cam wear etc. etc.

I'm just surprised that no matter how hard I try.......I can't buy the bloody stuff in Australia.

If anybody wants me to get them some AGIP SINT 2000, Let me know

That sounds about right re: price.

You can walk into Walmart and buy 10 Litres of Mobil 1 0W40 for $60, here its $210.

we are so ripped off on everything to do with cars here, just paid $1300 for tyres which were USD$500 at Tirerack

Local dealer said "are they legal ?" when asked why I can get them for that price on the internet

The litigation capital of the world is selling "illegal" tyres ....... I don't think so !!

    Hey Mr Dee Jay....
Back in the mid 1990s, Agip oil was actually blended here by Ampol/Caltex... Presumably that was the mainstream '$10 a 4 litre' bottle variety you could get from a Repco or Auto One.

Not sure that they actually brought in the higher performance oils... the ones in the shiny silver metal cans...

...but certainly did some heavy advertising, being major sponsor of Alan Jones' AMSA Formula Ford squad, and oil suppliers to Glenn Seton's Peter Jackson Racing.

    Time moves on I guess...

Does Ferrari ever update their 'approved oils' list for when the world moves on from the products that were available some 40 years ago? Mobil used to sticker up the HDT Commodores with a 'Mobil Super Drop' sticker... a product not available for at least the last 10 years...

Ferrari have changed to Shell helix. Which appears to be good for any Ferrari from the 90's and on. They recommend that but when you talk to people about older cars, this whole conversation comes out about the ZINC levels. To be told by USA guys that a lot of F40 owners in the US are still using AGIP, you've got to take that onboard I reckon.

BLACKJAG , why don't you start a poll as to which oil do you have in your car.
I'd do it but I don't know how (not good with computers......too old).

    choices are:-

    Shell helix
    AGIP
    Penrite
    CAltex edge
    Royal purple
    Redline
    Nulon

You might be able to think of others.

    Not me..

I can recall all the hype around the Australian Motor Sport Academy... 4 Formula Fords, a test car, big name sponsors... training programs in marketing and media and sponsorship procurement..

But even though the stickers were completely covering the cars... AMSA still reportedly wanted $170k for a season to drive there!!

Try using your own brain. It's just logic. The older cars need zinc. The new synthetic oils are better than the old mineral oils. Logical conclusion? Use a modern synthetic oil with zinc. DUH

GV says CALTEX EDGE. The more people you talk to, the more conflicting ideas about "what to use"........you get.
I'm researching "ROYAL PURPLE" at the moment.
I also think that a lot of this comes down to HOW often you use your car and how many K's you do in it. I think IANB said something about 40000k's and cam problems. My 308 has 83000 k's on the clock and NO cam problems. BUT it's been on AGIP for 30 years.
So, does that mean that AGIP works really well in my car ?
The 512BB has around 34000 MILES (speedos in miles) and had no CAM wear and has been on AGIP for 15 years. (not sure what PP was using before I bought it off him).

I do get the idea of the ZINC thing and shell helix doesn't seem to have much of that in it (if any). And that has something to do with CAT converters. Only ca I have that has CATS is my 355 and that's on SHELL HELIX as per the handbook recommendations.

ALSO, just because AGIP was used 20 years ago, doesn't mean that agip has'nt improved it's oils, just like everybody else. There's still italian motor bike brands that still recommend AGIP ie. Mangusta (I think.....I'm not an expert with this stuff.....just trying to put in my cars the best oil I can get FOR THAT CAR)

They don't. Try and keep up! We've discussed that.

I know of a few cars that have had premature cam wear. How the hell do you know yours don't have??

    Here's what my 308GTB had.....YOU NEED ZINC
