I am not fond of the nerf bar either but since it's been on the car since new and is seamlessly installed we'll leave it. The car is in remarkable condition for having been stored for 37 years after 27,000 miles. Unfortunately it hasn't been started for at least 10 years and none of the fluids were drained so the mechanical renovation is the great unknown. It is complete and original (including the spare tire, tools and targa top cover) but lacks documentation, which hopefully we will be able to find in the seller's files (she's 94). Remarkably, the seller also has a blue 1972 GT in equally good condition which she also bought new and her daughter will keep and sympathetically renovate too. Mike Sheehan could not find the chassis number (04000) in his data base so it was apparently a lost car. We will post pictures as we begin the renovation process.

After so many decades, these dealer add-ons become part of the car and its history, and I would hesitate to remove them as well. Particularly if the paint is original and I plan not to respray the car.

    Pictures would be great, Mike.

Worth a small consideration of who took the credit for the titles / race wins when using the dino engine/car. I think it was a small outfit called Ferrari.:))

Incidentally the "Scheda di Omologazione" for the 246Gt states "constructrice" as Ferrari and "modello" Dino 246Gt"

This is an official italian document i presume, its a different story of whether they put "badges" on the car though!! my 2 cents is they did

As I have said on a previous post regarding this subject, you have to turn the clocks back 40 years and look at the clientele.

Here you have a person who goes into a Ferrari showrrom to buy a new Ferrari, looks at the dino and agrees to buy it, for a considerable sum in those days i haste to add.

Imagine his horror when the sales rep turns around and says its not a Ferrari but a Dino, is that OK.............

Maranello in the UK i beleive put them on the car in the showrooms, i could be wrong but doubt it. Ferrari knew this too.

My dino came with them fitted as originals so they stay on the car, I also respect others taking them off. The car doesnt need any badges to be judged the prettiest car ever made.

New question. I am trying to get the manuals from the seller. She found an original dusting cloth, advertising pamphlet, manual and instructions for the USA version. However, she also owns a 1972 blue GT (it's been left to her daughter who has no intention of selling) and the manuals say 246 GT, not GTS. Did Ferrari produce a specific manual for the GTS? If they did, I will have to return those and find the others.

Have received it on good authority today, from someone who worked at Maranello UK who did PDI's for new cars in the early 1970's.

The badging was put on the cars prior to delivery, it was sold as a Ferrari as punters over here didnt like buying a Ferrari without signage.

forget the romantic fantasy this century, 1970's dinos had stiff competition, sticking a Ferrari badge on the arse end upped the anti

I love the script (Dino) as well. Does not need any thing else. This car is a tribute to "ENZO" Son ...and Fobes Magazine has said that the Dino is one of the ten
best design automobile ever built in the world.

    My second attempt :

    I have an L. 0474

Look into the engine bay from the back of the car. With head in bay look to the rear of the car. You should/might/ could see the prancing horse. Silver on black.

It's an interesting observation by the average 'non car enthusiast' person who see the Dino. Before paint my Dino had Ferrari script on it and people would say "beautiful car ... what year is it?" Now post paint without script people say "beautiful car .... what is it???". Then you try to explain it's a 'DINO', built by Ferrari. They then just give you this confused espression ....

Can you prove that? The punters weren't buying a Ferrari's they were buying Dino's

BTW what is Maranello UK? Is it the dealer or an official office of Ferrari?

Wasn't Maranello Consessionaires the official distributer of Ferrari for the UK? Kind of like Porsche Cars North America with the 914. In the U.S. the 914 was a Porsche, In Europe it was a Volkswagen-Porsche nicknamed "VoPo". In Europe and the U.S. the 914 didn't have a crest on the front. In the U.S. all 914's got a Porsche crest on the steering wheel pad. In Europe the plain 914 got a Wolfsburg crest and I believe the 914-6 got a Porsche crest. Question is, how official is it when the official distributer puts on the badge vs the factory?

Correct, as for how official it was to put badges on them, i guess it was frowned upon by the Ferrari heirachy, but if it sold Ferrari cars who cared. You also have to ask yourself that Maranello Consessionaires had to buy a lot of badges which wouldnt have gone unnoticed from the Italian parts department!!

My 1972 garage find (we're the second owner) has a Ferrari badge on the hood and script above the rear license plate. It also has a nerf bar between the front bumpers. Maybe most 1970s is the door ding protectors similar to a Cadillac De Ville on each side. According to the seller (the first owner) everything came from the dealership new as is. Since it's original paint and chrome, all will stay. In the original interior is also a Xiconet Weather Sentry which hooked into the radio to give weather reports from 66 federal weather stations across the country. Early satellite radio!

I've never lamented the absence of the Ferrari script, but believing the Dino to be worthy of a prancing horse, each of my Dinos has a cavallino rampante on its tail panel. I know that many disagree, but it's how I've always felt. Fred

Everytime I get an irresistible urge to attach a Ferrari badge, I look for a likely looking spot on my workbench or tool cart!

    Andres

PS: I know it would be a problem for me to decide to remove badges that have been on the car since new, as they are part of the car's history.

Since I have a small motley collection of old cars and have to maintain a small inventory of spares for them, I have found a practical use of Ferrari tags. I use them to remind me (and anyone helping me) which cabinet to put Dino parts in.
