could use some help figuring what I need replacing.
My door handle isn't working or the locking mechanism anyway.
The door panel is off as I'm getting the interior redone and I'm wondering
what the broken part is called and how much of it I have to replace.

On the inside there is a circular thing to which the plastic rectangular cover fits over
a metal rod which I think works the door lock/unlock mechanism. The circular part seems sheared and there is nothing for the plastic covered rod to afix to.
since a picture is worth a thousand words, here is a picture of the broken one and what it's supposed to look like from the functioning passenger side. does anyone what I need to replace?
    thanks

btw: putting in a new custom full leather interior with new carpets, new dash cover and leather center console. looking forward to getting it back. did it backwards since it still needs paint.

It's all made out of potmetal, so unless you have Muggyweld's special potmetal brazing rod to weld the ball joint end back on, you're kind of SOL...

Your only other choice is to make a custom ball-joint end out of an old screw or bolt and afix it to the lock-tumbler cam and then reattach the door lock link back to it. Maybe better that way.

The entire door handle is shared with the Lamborghini Jalpa, so there's lots of spares available. Oh, wait, it also the X1/9 door handle, so a call to a FIAT wrecking yard might get you the whole thing for less than $300+. So where's a FIAT wrecking yard? There's goota be at least one.

I had no doubt that there was one cheaper somewhere ;) It's good that you were able to ID the part. Best of luck.

called them up; they had one (used of course, no key). $175 plus shipping. I'll have a locksmith swap out the lock with my old one.
    thanks alot.

got it. price was right. but it was pitted and tarnished. couldn't see putting it on my car.
I'd rather not be able to lock the driver's side door from the outside. I assume the 375 price from Ricambi is for new, right? but then i have to change out the lock or try. That doesn't look too easy or even possible. Might just leave it as it is.

Is it necessary to swap out the lock or can the tumbler be reset to the four digit code on your key?

good to know alan. the door opens but it won't lock from the outside with the key. ultimately, not a big deal. fyi: found a hispanic guy who does excellent interior work who is doing the whole interior (except headliner); leather everything including door panels and dash and counsel. had him do the lincoln and bentley and they both came out great.

I would think there has been a collapse of the spring pin/key interface...

They explained to me the wear on the pins is side to side in the bore, and eventually one falls out.

I had two locksmiths attempt to cut a key "by feel" and one eventually did, but they said that was very hard on it, to rock a blank side to side that way.

I thought of you the other day, I was close to your place..

went by to check on the car (having an new interior put in) and the door doesn't open. back to the drawing board. called david at ricambi and he didn't have any new ones.
ferrparts still lists one but they appear to want 300 now for what they sold me last month for 175. hard to track down parts for this.
