Hi, I've been wanting to visit my family in Italy and look at some colleges there, and I'm wondering if you all know cheap ways to get from the US (I'm near Philly) to Italy (Family is near Rome, colleges are in Turin & Milan).

So far, I've found flights from the $700s, and this is during the spring. During the summer, the prices only increase.

What methods do you guys use for cheaper transportation?

    Thanks!

    -Michael

If you know people willing to give you their miles as gifts, then you can get the ticket deeply discounted or free. If you have membership miles or some other credit card with mileage rewards, you might want to check to see if you have accumulated enough for a freebie but usually the available dates are restricted and the routes are not the best (unless you have a TON of miles).

Otherwise, tickets to Europe have been around $650 plus tax for at least the last ten years. Occasionally city-pairs go on sale for various airlines, and you could get something for $399 plus tax, but don't hold your breath. To be kept in the loop for these, subscribe to various travel blogs and airline mileage program email updates and newsletters. These quickly fill up your inbox unless you know how to set up filters or have a "junk" email account that you only check occasionally.

I use Hipmunk to book my tickets...try it out. It's a cool site.

It's a shame, I went to Italy with my family in 2000 for tickets that were $300. Of course, this was back when Italy used the Lira, but those were better times. We loaded up on gold when it was far cheaper. Fast forward to 2008 and tickets for 4 to Italy alone cost us $5000 (bear in mind it was early summer).

I'll try that site, thanks for the tip!
