So You Have $100k to Spend....

After a few good plays in a couple of markets, I have accumulated $120k in my car fund. NEVER had this level of cash before (although I did pay $75k for my Porsche Turbo 7 years ago). This money isn't needed for any bills or others committments, its just fun money.

So if I wanted to spend it on a Ferrari, what would you recommend? Love the newer cars, but also the classics and everything in-between. Not afraid of maintenance costs or a mini-restoration.

Or I could buy a couple dozen rolexes....LOL

 

512BB or Testarossa... if you've got the coin to get a V12 Mid-Rear Ferrari YOU DO IT.

Seriously, you've got the chance to buy a V12, Enzo-era Supercar... grab it.

Older cars - short term: 365 GTC/4 - got to be a deal at 1/3 to 1/4 of a Daytona. Prices should be going up any minute.

Little newer - longer term: A boxer. Tremendous value at about $100K. Look for rapid appreciation within 5 years.

Long term - Testarossa or 512 TR. They are giving them away now. Bottom of the depreciation curve.

Newer - a really nice 360 - almost at the bottom of the depreciation curve. Great cars.

Already have the 360.. and it is a reliable, fun, great car. Next I would personally LOVE to have a Boxer! Wouldn't loose a dime of $$

 

If that were my budget, I'd probably go 512TR or Boxer.

 

Keep it long enough and a Boxer will probably pay you back every penny it spent and then pay for your 360 to boot...

 

Today I'd stuff most of it in the NYSE, S&P500, ASE and dump it all by Nov 1 making a nice profit then buy your Ferrari

 

Funny money it's not. Go drive a few cars and buy what pleases you. If you don't, a bad decision will sting for a long time after the money is gone.

 

Try to find a little more and buy a Stradale or by a 308 and have plenty of gas money.

Its the best iconic Ferrari in that price range you can buy. Drive it, enjoy it, remain valuable.

Try to drive each of your final choices before you buy the car.
Either a test drive at a dealer or find people in your area that own that type of car.

One of the cars you might really like is a 550.
A good one can be bought for about $75k.

That's actually a difficult amount, because the uber-collectibles (246, Daytona, 330 GTC and others) are above $200K, and the other really desirable ones are well below.

With $100K, and limited to a Ferrari, I'd get a 'glass 308 or top notch 328 and bank the rest.

The 512 BBi is a good choice -- no stupid motorized seatbelts, clamshell with beautiful engine on display, classic manual gearbox, etc. But $100K probably doesn't get you a great one, and the first $20K service bill might dampen your enthusiasm.

For the Enzo-era stuff, you're kind of stuck with 2+2s, which might not be your cup of tea (or maybe it is...)

For $100K, you could also get into a 1969-73 Porsche 911S 2.4, put however many miles on it you want, outrun most modern cars, and probably make money after a few years. That would be my third "smart money" recommendation after the 308/328.

If you're looking to blow the money and really don't care about resale, the 550 is a handsome car and very scarce compared to the 17,000+ 360s. That would be my pick of the LdM-era Ferraris.

Ferrari's statistics say that there were a total of 3083 550's built over the six years they were made (1996 - 2001).
That's a lot fewer than the 360's or 430's, but still that is a fairly large number of cars compared to the vintage Ferraris of the 1950's and 1960's.

I bought my 550 about 3.5 years ago for the mid-$70k range and the prices have stayed about the same since then.
So, you won't lose money on your 550 over the next 5 - 10 years, but you're not going to see much financial appreciation either.

I think the Boxer is the Ferrari to buy, near your price range, if you want a chance of making some financial upside on it over the next 10 years.

 

In the next few years, if I have the coin for it, I would love to add a 512 BB to my garage. As a young teen, this car was my ultimate dream car. It's nice to see, that someday soon, I may be in a position to finally get one. Back in the late 70's early 80's a world class performer. Today my "Vintage" f355 will easily outperform it. However, I can remember how much I really loved the boxer. I remember drawing the shark-nose shape and gills of the boxer as a kid to help pass time. The knock-off style rims. These cars are truly beautiful, Boxer style paint and all, of course!

 

I'd probably buy a 360 and have it be my DD. I'd do all required maintenance and other wise take car of it while driving it into the ground/using it up. If you want a toy, an older choice would be good too but the odds of a daily driver is lower but fine if that's not what you want.

As far as a 550, the style and rarity of the Barchetta appeals to me.....just not in the price range yet (ever?)

 

Have never leased a car, but not opposed to it I guess. I imagine your suggestion would be to lease a newer more expensive car, right? Like a 430 Scud?
