My 86 328 GTS does not accelerate normally from a stop but is fine at high speeds. The RPMs increase quickly but the speed does not increase commensurate with the throttle input. After moving slowly for several seconds, the car eventually reaches 40 MPH and accelerates fine after that. Everything else seems normal.

This started occurring after I fixed a coolant leak in the hose from the expansion tank to the crossover pipe underneath the plenum. The leak was just before the hose connects to the crossover pipe, which is very close to a couple electrical connectors underneath the plenum.

Any ideas? Does anyone know what those connectors are and if they are related to the acceleration problem?

I don't understand the conditions yet. You mean you press on the gas, the engine RPM would increase but the vehicle's speed does not increase ? If so, then the clutch is suspect.

Sounds like a slipping clutch if the description is accurate. I am thinking those connectors may be for oil pressure and status gauge?

could it be an air leak ? one of the hoses?

Ditto on that. If the engine is running smoothly, and revs up fine, but the car isn't moving, the #1 suspect is the clutch. Suggest you have it looked at before driving it again. If the clutch is gone, you could find yourself stranded somewhere. Any chance that you got coolant in the bell housing while you were changing the hoses?? (Don't know if that's even possible, but the thought comes to mind since this started right after you changed the hoses in that area.) It's slippery stuff and doesn't go well with clutch surfaces.

The clutch is only 6 years old with less than 8,000 miles on it and I don't notice any slipping. The problem seems to be intermittent. I thought it was some air/fuel mixture problem with the lambda system

Possibly a failing plug extender? I had similar symptoms and found a small burn in one of my extenders. Are you getting flow through both exhaust pipes? Are you noticing a bank dropping below 40mph?

I go back to connection of all the air hoses - you may have a leak or something plugged up causing the stumbling issue.
Are you sure the Aux air hoses are all tight and connected... these are easy to come off if not using the right clamps etc...

This right here is why people are pointing at the clutch. This would be the definitive symptom of clutch slippage. If you are sure your clutch is fine then I think you need to better describe your symptom(s).
