I have a friend in Adelaide who suggest I could find a position with a police dept there and his brothers wife is an officer so he is helping me persue that and asking her how I should procede. I also have an old 'work mate' in Perth but we do not talk that much via email since he is so busy.

I wanted to get some advice and opinions about how I should approach this. I'm looking for a total change in my life but still want to stay in law enforcement so my concerns are immediate employment and boarding while I persue my law enforcement position.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Gregg

I have a few friends that are cops and I know they get homes to live in for free. I am not 100% sure if this would apply to a foreigner or not.

I actually have 3x police "owned" homes right across the road behind my house.

I think they get these homes rent free because we live in the remote outback. These guys also get paid extra for living out here because no one wants to live out here.

If you go even more remote (to the aboriginal communities), your pay doubles. You have to work a minimum two week stint when you volunteer for it. My friends volunteer to do this when they want a bit of extra cash to take away on holidays.

    Pap,
At this point I would appreciate any assistance you can help me with. I just applied for my 'work visa' online so I am NOT just yanking chains, I am prepared to sell my car (I will need the money for airfare and immediate living expenses) but man I desperately need a change in my life.

If it is not to much of an inconvenience for you can you get some info for me? I know it does not really matter but it can also help too let them know I am already a certified police officer with about 730hrs of training.

    I'm ready man!

I leftout the humor part, Tex is moving in with Pap and he promises to exercise the 348 EVERY DAY yet still performing maintenance needs as they arise. I might need another sleeping bag and air cushion mattress so...................

No worries mate, I will see if I can contact all of them tomorrow and enquire more. I don't know if they are working weekends or not at the moment. Either way, I will contact them.

I am not sure if they know ANYTHING about a foreign police officer coming straight into the police force. You might have to go straight to the police academy and train/learn the procedures to comply with our Australian police laws.

    *****s knows*

But I will ask them for more info and see what they say. If they don't know anything about it, I will let you know regardless.

You are most welcome. We might even slap some police lights on the 348 and use that as a police car. :D

I'm certain I will have to attend their academy which is not an issue for me (he says as he finishes his pint and snubs the ciggy butt). I do not plan to leave and can hopefully become a citizen. I just spoke with a fellow co-worker (owner) of the Toyota dealer I worked with just so I could get an idea of what I can sell my car for and it was $1k more than I was expecting which means more in the way of handling my own and not depending.

I am alittle concerned about being too far from a potential employer unless I just truck my bike along. Where you live is it really in the "outback"? I think within the next 30-60 days I will be ready to board the plane but who knows.

I do not know if that is just sarcasm or a joke but I do not take any **** from anyone, I can handle myself and I am not some newbie.

Thanks for your input though it was....amusing.

Sorry not positive.......The cops are restrained by so many rules down under that I suspect you might find it a bit of a culture shock. Lebanese muslim gangs have a stranglehold on organized crime in Sydney and are making a mockery of our legal system. Cops I know are jack of it and some have left the force as they are sick of arresting these guys who are then given lenient or no sentences by the magistrates. Cops then live in fear of retribution attacks. As one told me "why should a constable on $40/hr risk his family'sand his own life trying to arrest these ****ers". If a cop shoots a crim here in Aus, all hell breaks loose and the mostly left wing print media end up portraying the crim as the victim. Just sucks

    Melbourne is looking for PSO's.
They are meant to be part of Victoria Police, but not actually Police.
They are trained and paid to guard the railway stations and public transport.

There is alot of advertising going on at the moment.

You will need a work Visa and then Vic Police will need to sponsor you on a 2 year or 5 year work visa. You can then apply for an extension if you wish, or marry an Australian girl.

Best is to google Victoria Police PSO (Public Safety Officer) and send them an email.

Being a Yank with experience you never know your lucky stars.

The plan is for Melbourne to grow from about 4 million to 7 million in the next 25 years so people have to come from somewhere.

Trust me, you don't wanna come out here. :D

But if you do, this town has 20,000 people. 5 mins to anywhere etc..etc.

Small time crime, mainly little abo's breaking into people's homes and small time drug dealers. Nothing like a big city, of course. And the little abo kids get NO punishment either, which is extremely fustrating as they go and break into someone elses house the next day.

If you go to the big smoke, then I am not sure where you will live/be based. That's your problem. :D

    Hey Mr Dee Jay....
Australia has a separate police force in each of its States, and a Federal police force for its territories. There are no police forces responsible to local councils (counties) like in the US.

To apply seems easy enough, but for an ex-pat it is unclear...

    NSW Police http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/recruitment
    Victoria Police http://www.policecareer.vic.gov.au/
    Queensland Police http://www.policerecruit.qld.gov.au/
    South Australia Police http://www.achievemore.com.au/officer/index.html
    Western Australia Police http://www.stepforward.wa.gov.au/
    Tasmania Police http://www.police.tas.gov.au/join-us/
    ACT/NT/Federal Police http://www.afp.gov.au/jobs/how-to-apply/ways-to-join.aspx

Lots of possibilities... a number of inductions to visit Commandant Lassard each year... :D

With your experience already existing in the Law Enforcement industry, I can most definitely think you'll be right at home with our bunch here. Come on down and get rid of the hoons and idiots and we'll welcome you with (more) open arms ;)

A good taste for civilian policing is doing PSO work- which is as close as you could get to joining the police.

    Michael.
