Which year 911 should I buy?

    I wanted a older 911 because I like smaller cars, and newer 911's have grown larger with each generation. But I agree, that driving an old car is fun for a Sunday, but I wanted a car I could use for long weekend trips and be comfortable by modern standards. I ended up with a Cayman because it looked and drove like a smaller historic 911, yet had the modern AC and safety equipment that made it a real driver (my friend has a 1997 993 and it sits in his garage).

    I know 90% of people wouldn't consider a 987 because they grew up wanting a 911... but for those who are more interested in the nuts & bolts than the prestige & history, it makes an interesting third option when considering what to buy

    I've driven a 930 Turbo and a 997, both manual transmission. The 930 was a kick in the pants, loads of character. But it would get old driving it every day regardless of traffic conditions. I almost feel like using a 930 as a DD would cause it to lose some of its specialness, if that's even a word.

    I don't know how much you're willing to spend on your next Porsche, but if you're ok with a $90k budget then a 997 Carrera GTS.

    I went 2010 GT3.

    The op didn't want the newer design, he thinks of it as a little too big. For a 997 that's the best option other than GT3 or Turbo. I like the firm ride of the GT3 cars and if I didn't then I would opt to modify it as to soften it up.

    My brother (original owner) is selling his excellent 2006 Carrera S with the X51 power option, factory aero kit, full leather interior, full power adaptive sport seats, Carrera side decals, 3m film, factory wheel upgrade (forget the model name), sports chrono, factory sports exhaust, red seat belts, artic silver center console, etc... So many options that the msrp was $120k. The mileage is in the forties, no accidents, no paintwork at all, non smoker, no dings, no dents, never tracked, never abused. Artic silver on black interior with a six speed. Central Florida driven car.

    Nothing yet. I'm going to take my time on this one.

    Beautiful blue Targa in that link. To me, that is a classic looking 911.

    Are there websites or subscription mailings where Porsche enthusiasts advertise their cars for sale?
    Does the PCA website have a good classifieds section?
    Is there something like "The Ferrari Market Letter" or FerrariAds out there for well-taken-care-of Porsches?

    Rennlist is good Porsche site
    PCA classifieds a little tricky to navigate and you must be card carrying member with login

    My local PCA does have local cars. Not a massive selection.

    yeah, the PCA website is a disaster, I tried listing a car on it and it was a total cluster****.

    I'd suggest RL, Pelican Parts (esp. for older 911s, i.e. 993 and back), and Team Speed.

    Victory has a bad rep. Remember Texas is a title washing state.

    Truspeed I purchased my 993 TT S from and they were very good to work with.

    Pelican I don't go on often.

    Team speed has lots of cars for sale but isn't really just Porsche.

    I'm not an expert on the topic but I believe it is a way to remove the "totaled", "salvaged", or "flood damaged" documentation attached to a car's title.

    Lots of cars are "totaled" every year by the insurance companies, but aren't that badly damaged.
    It is just the fact that their estimated total repair bill gets too close to their wholesale bluebook value.
    So, a Porsche that is worth maybe $30k low bluebook can be "totaled" for a non-major accident when the repair cost estimate reaches $25k - $30k.
    These cars get repaired for less money and sent to a State that re-titles the car (using the same VIN) but doesn't retain the fact that it was once "totaled" or "salvaged".
    Texas is one of the States whose car titles don't have the ability to carry that prior-damage "branding" on a car's title document.

    The only 911 that really excites me in this price range is the 996GT2.
    Its the only one that excites me period. At least think about it.

    For your listed needs however the 993 Targa just has something about it for a "practical/enjoyable" 911.
