I'm wondering if there are any users here, I downloaded & installed the software for Lion OSX but can't seem to get it running. Anyone else run into an issue like this?

    Nope!

I presume you downloaded a "dmg" file and ran the installer from that image? Did it install OK?

What happens when you try and start it? Error message(s)?

    Cheers,
    Ian

The first time it did Friday night, everything worked fine so I called it a night. Later on yesterday I tried to start the program & got nothing.

Don't ya' hate it when that happens!?......

Have you tried going "the other way" - Pick up a jpg file and drop it onto the Gimp icon? This should start The Gimp and open your jpg at the same time.

Have you verified the checksum of the dmg file you downloaded? [I suspect it's good as it started once, but worth checking.] No error messages from the installer?

    Cheers,
    Ian

Kill it in task manager and restart again, Mac port unfortunately is not very stable, it hangs on startup and not only sometimes

    :(

Gotta be honest, I mainly run it under Linux, and it's rock solid there.

A quick poke suggests it still runs under X11, correct? Not a good thing IME......

    Cheers,
    Ian

Is there a benefit to GIMP over Pshop other than cost ?

It's open source so the community can offer more tools & options than Pshop. So far friends that have used it with their Macs had nothing but positive experiences.

It runs excellent on Linux, very good on Windows and OK (yes x11 lol) on Mac. Mac port also has memory management issues. It hangs on loading 1 gig file instantly, Linux and Win version has no problems with that

I like gimp not only because its free, it has some things, like pattern generators not available in Photoshop (Illustrator has it, but its overkill).

I keep it on a thumbdrive so i can use it at work, it will run without installing anything, huge benefit to me because i cant install anything on that workstation.

I'm a regular GIMP user - no need to fork out the Photoshop money for my photo editing needs, and I'm using Linux anyway.

However, what absolutey annoys me is that they still keep their strange multiple-window system. That is one of the UI paradigmas which gave Linux a bad name, and while the rest of the Linux world has long ditched it, GIMP still drags it on...

Haven't gotten around to installing it, but I did read (on Lifehacker) that they have done away with the multiple windows, unless you explicitly enable that. Check to see where that option is.

    Wow! That does surprise me.

Seems most of the "big" Open Source projects release pre-built packages at the same time as the new source - I have no problem with using compilers etc but know a lot of folk won't go near 'em.

Be interesting to see how long before they appear.

BTW, seems yours is running in "funny" language! - Dunno if I could make that work ;) :)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Yup, that really is a bit strange with the need for compiling it... they haven't released a windows installer either. However, I never got Gimp directly from their site before. "Source now, packages later" may be their usual release strategy. After all, they're part of GNU...;)

    (lol @ language - no, that wasn't a wrong compiler flag...;) :))

I use it a lot on both Mac/PeeCee, the CS suite got too fat and GIMP does everything Photoshop does just as good or better and it is free

I feel like an idiot. I used GIMP on my PC but then I got a Mac book pro and didn't think it was available for Mac. I am going to download it now. LOL Thanks for this thread!

How do I get the pictures from iPhoto to come up on Gimp? I have to go through a ton of files just to get to some pictures, then I have to search through all of them to find the pictures I want. Any help?

FYI for anyone using GIMP on a Mac, the latest version (2.8.2) is now a native app for OSX. X11 is no longer needed, keyboard shortcuts work, performance is faster etc. Its definitely worth upgrading to.

Awesome! Thanks for that. I'm not a heavy Gimp user (a little more under Linux) but X11 on the Mac is getting *very* old. [Same with Openoffice -v- NeoOffice - The latter is so much nicer on the Mac without the need for X11]

    Cheers,
    Ian
