Was out driving last night when I noticed that one of the warning lights came on. Checked the manual and it was the "Engine Control System Malfunction (OBD)" light (looks like an engine). Not sure if this is the same as a "CEL" as I have seen mentioned in other posts, but it got my attention. Drove home, and the car seemed to be working normally, thought the exhaust sounded a bit funny. Have only had the car for two weeks, so a lot of these sounds are new to me.

Read some threads, and many mentioned it could be a loose gas cap. Also sent a note to the dealer and they said the same thing. Suggested I tighten the cap and give it a try. Was going to take it for a 15 minute drive, but after about 30 seconds, I realized I was lucky to make it around the block and back into the garage.

Engine was very "jerky" in first and second gear. And the car seemed to have no power. I did wash the car this past Saturday and made sure to cover the vents. Took it out Saturday and Sunday with no problems.

Obviously a big bummer after two weeks of ownership (2007 430 Spider). Guess I will have to have it towed to the dealer. Does anyone have a sense of what this problem might be?

Yes the little picture of an engine is the CEL (check engine light).

Buy or borrow an OBDII reader and get the error code. I would do that before having it towed anywhere. Most autoparts stores will loan you one.

I use mine at least once a month, and was a good investment. My 06 430 gets a lot of misfire warnings, sometimes because I start it too fast (pre OK), and sometimes because of cold-low rpm studders. Having an OBDII reader is just part of car ownership IMO. I use it often on the Lexus and Porsche as well.

After you get and post the code, we might have other group-think options before heading to the dealer. But I will not speculate until we have the codes, a waste of everyones time and many 1s and 0s.

Trent is right on. I picked one up for $80 and its a great tool that every owner should have. With that said, if you've only had it for 2 weeks, the dealer should take care of it for you for at no charge.

besides paying big bucks for an SD 2 or 3 reader what is the better choice for a good ODB reader for the Ferrari?

    Thanks for the recommendation guys.

Went to Autozone and picked up a reader.

Error code was P0497 (Evaporative Emmissions System Low Purge Flow)

Any thoughts on how to proceed?

I recommend the Innova 3130, its a little more expensive, like 1x lug nut more expensive than a cheapy unit ;), but shows real time data, captured data at time of CEL, and is generally a fine piece of hardware.

It could be anything from a gas cap (you mentioned), a bad purge valve, or any hose or fitting in between. On the 360 there is a known weak point on top of one or both of the gas tanks that cause this error (all from memory, please use search function). 360 and 430 are very similar in many regards.

If the dealer will fix for free, yes send it to them.

Will this cause a power loss, not likely IMO. Remember that sometimes the 430 starts on one bank (4cyl), and a soft reset usually fixes this. If not I agree to try a hard reset using the switch in the front trunk, passenger side fire wall. If this is a fuel bank issue and one 4cyl system is not getting fuel this would cause serious power loss, yes.

Soft reset: Turn car off for a few seconds, try again
Hard reset: disconnect battery using switch in front trunk. Make sure you have your radio codes!!!!! And you need to read the re-learn procedure. Lots of posts on this procedure.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Told the mechanic the code (P0497) / problem. They suggested having it towed in. They replaced the left and right purge valve and inidcated that this was likely causing the loss of power to the car.

Even though repairs weren't covered under warranty, the dealership agreed to take care of the cost since it was purchase just a few weeks ago. Should be back today.

Figured since the car was there I might ask them to open up the exhaust valves before sending it back. Have heard it makes quite a difference to the sound.

Rockman, if they don't end up doing the exhaust valves, just let us know - it's super easy and you can do it yourself in 2 minutes.

Dealer fixed everything (Ferrari of Newport Beach) at no charge. Car runs better than ever.

They also opened the exhaust valves, and it sounds AWESOME!!!

I was actually worried that it would be too loud. But it just sounds great, and makes for an amazing driving experience.

Thanks again to everyone for your help.

Yeah agreed, plus you won't get the black stuff leaking out of your pipes any more.
