as far as strike fighters go, the f14s and mig 29s are very strong designs, but aesthetically i always found the f16 falcon a more elegant design overall IMO :)

Beautiful machines wether they are man made or natural are evidence of the rule: Form follows function.

that's certainly one perspective on beauty, many machines i love for thier appeal of form and function......aesthetics, being more a purely artistic perspective, balance of form, proportions, etc :)

Ah... the closest aircraft to a Ferrari would be the F-104. Nothing came acter that. ;)

But I'd definately get a PPI for this one...

Developed out of Macchi Castoldi 202 and MC 205 platform but with a different tail. Fiat G55 also had a similar profile.

If it looks familar, it's because it used the Bf-109 as a model... even used the same DB engine (modified - some actually built by DB, others licensed by Fiat). Only a few were ever manufactured.

The similar Fiat G55 (same engine) was more widely used (as Ney said.)

It had nothing to do with the Macchis except a similar look. It was developed from the Re 2000, 2001 and 2002.

The wing planform of all is similar to the P-47, since the original Re 2000 was inspired by the P-35, which was the forebear of the P-47.

As far as I understand, Italy developed a common platform design, the series 5 fighter and had Macchi (202 and 205), Fiat (G55 and G56) and Regia aeronautica (Re2005) all build them. Yes, each company developed them out of their own earlier models, but they are related and look similar due to the common platform. My comment of "developed out of" was not accurate. Developed in conjunction with might have been more accurate.

My favorite is the YF-23 "Widow Maker II" built by Northrup Grumman for the advanced fighter fly-off. The F-22 won.
