why do some exhausts "burble" loudly when you let off the throttle ? what type of internal muffler structures result in these characteristics ?

I was looking at some youtube clips of 308s with magnaflows and under throttle they sound good, but when backing off the throttle, the "burbling" part of the equation is too loud. Is this due to the wide open guts of the magnaflow ?

I was considering the magnaflow route, but now that I think about it, the burbling is really too loud, and if you want to get off the gas right away to reduce noise the loud burbling gives you away. Here in Kalifornia, we like to have fun, but have to play a lot of games to avoid attracting the attention of the Poliezi !!!

It is caused by hot, unburnt fuel finding oxygen in the muffler on the back pulse. Essentially a small backfire inside the muffler. Sometimes they make their way out of the exhaust tips and that looks really cool. Most i cars don't run rich enough for that to be a real issue and even less so if you have functioning cats.

OMG YOU MUST BE KIDDING! LOL.

My FAVORITE part of having a Ferrari (and by the by I have a Magnaflow/decatted) is just that...at the show I went to today, I took a 16 year old kid for a ride. During the ride, on the downshift on the overrun the burble and popping sound made us look at each other and smile, and the kid says, I LOVE the burbling, and I said, "that is the best part of owning a Ferrari".

So I guess I am not the guy to speak with about your "problem" LOL :D:D:D

When i lean the carbs way out per the typically instruction on achieving "best idle", i have fantastic popping and snorting. When i richen it up (3 turns out with euro screws and 60 idles) the popping goes away and its a very nice burble. Both sounds are great.

+1 on the bubbling sound. If only my 328 would do it more often!

    :D:D:D

    Best ever experiences with this:

1: Fellow F-chatter in Challenge stradale trailing me, head out of his window, unlit cigarette between his teeth, "trying to light it"
2: In a dark tunnel in Italy, utterly obnoxious Ducati biker being two feet from my rear bumper, trying to prove a point. Until my exhaust lit up. I didn't know that Ducatis had brake performance like that :D

    Hans,

I wonder if the Ducati driver was one of my Soldiers.

He used to do crap like that no matter how many times I'd crush his nuts .........

He lives in Vicenza and would ride to Heidelberg every month for Reserve duty regularly nearing 180 mph in Germany.

Of course if he "ran into you" (Brenner Pass?) he would N-E-V-E-R tell me what happened if you burnt his eyebrows.

Just vouching for Rizzo308 if anyone is interested in buying something from him. Don't worry that he's on another continent and the boat takes forever to get across the pond, it'll get here!

Had Sport car Specialists here in Savannah do the belt service on my 308 QV last week. They did a fuel calibration and a proper4 wheel alignment. When they went for a drive after the alignment, they called to ask me about my "burbling" exhaust. My 308 is euro, so no cats or air pumps. Turns out the pass side donut where the muffler and rear header joins was leaking, and the drivers side header was starting to show burn spots. They found some donuts and man what a difference in how the car sounds.

I had a straight pipe on my 328 for awhile. Fire would come out of the tips and it would burble on overrun. But with a muffler, i am not sure you should have alot of farts and burbling unless there is a air leak somewhere. That can burn valves, so i would look into it, as my QV has an Ansa Sport factory muffler and it does not "burble" with new gaskets.

I've got cats and a stock exhaust, and I still get a nice burble. It is sublime.

Not yet. It may be because the 348 was my first Ferrari, or that I loved the slats, but I may end up having to buy a Testarossa to satisfy the 12 cylinder and the slats again - LOL :D:D:D
