Could use some help with identifying this problem. I have had the car for a year and when the car sits for a week or more and I start it cold, there is a loud tapping noise and it is hard to tell what side of the engine it is comming from. The noise always disapears after about 1 minute and you never hear it again not even a tiny bit. If I drive it again later in the day or in a few days, I don't hear it at start up ..only when it is cold or sits for a while. A few things to note: The air pump belt is connected but the pump is not plugged in. The prevous owner ran over a curb or something and the manifolds have some damage on the right side where they connect to precats so maybe a small crack or maybe piston slap? I have some new manifolds but have not replaced them yet. I have attached the youtube video link I took yesterday and started the video as soon as I could and at 55 seconds you can hear it is starting to go away. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I have read a few similar threads but everyone needs to hear it to help so...

Based on your description, I'd go with (cold) V-belt slapping in one of the pulleys rather than an exhaust crack/leak that closes up with temperature, and that's the easiest thing to investigate first -- i.e, just spray a little belt-dressing on the V-belts and see if that gives some relief or not. Always possible that it's something mechanical in the air pump clutch bearings (that goes away once the grease gets warmed and redistributed) -- but I'd rules the V-belts in or out first - JMO.

Is your alternator belt the (early) V-belt or the (late) multi-rib belt.

Thanks again Steve, I guess I never thought of the belt. I hope your guess is a good one as it sounds worse. I think I have the multi-rib belt. Do you see any problem with taking off the other belt to the air pump? I don't need to pass any emissions stuff where I live and it has been electrically unplugged since before I purchased the car. I guess it would also make it easer to change the alternator belt if I no longer had the other belt on. I will check the tightness of the alternator belt, give the belt some dressing spray, and let you know if that works.

Water works just as well as belt dressing for this kind of diagnosis. My Mondi 3.2 had it... it was the accessory belt.

It's more than OK to remove that V-belt if the clutch has been unplugged -- prevents wearing out the bearings in the clutch (although not spinning a bearing for many years isn't such a good thing either).

    Hi Steve,

Again you are spot on. I removed the belt to the air pump...which was not very tight... And I have not heard any noise at cold start since. Had me worried as it really sounded like an internal motor issue. Thanks again :)

Glad to hear that it was the least of all possible evils ;) -- thanks for posting the final result/outcome information...
