My A/C wasn't blowing cold and compressor wasn't coming on at all so I charged a can of R134. Now compressor comes on and cold air coming out but high pressure lines intermittently vibrating such that vibration felt through battery cover. The vibration is just the high press. Line, not receiver/dryer.Guages indicate low side 50/high 150 with not much variation. When I tightened the high pressure port of the manifold guage the vibration stopped. Anyone have any thoughts before I submit to experts /dealer with open wallet?

Definitely high pressure line vibration and now compressor short cycling. Anyone any ideas?

A short cycling compressor usually indicates too much Freon in the system. The compressor can't stay on very long because it will build up too much pressure.

You may have been right although I was worried something more complex was going on. I evacuated the system, pulled a vacuum and recharged. Now have cold air without vibration or short cycling but we"ll see if that does it...

    Hi mate,

Well done, that will fix it.

You had air in the system, that can cause the high pressure gauge/hoses to "shake" violently (hard to explain over the internet, but yeah).

Have seen it many times and the only fix is to recover the gas, vac down and recharge.

Which is the only way to service and repair a/c systems properly anyway. ;)

Thanks Pap. I was hoping that's all it was. When I had my local shop hook up their machine was getting weird pressures, high suction and low high side so was worried there was some blockage or my compressor was toast.

I think you still have an issue as the air was able to enter the system. Did you do a leak down test after evacuating the system?

Pulled a vacuum for an hour , no evidence of major leak as the vacuum held no problem. I guess there could still be small leak though, didn't use dye so hopefully she stays cold. The vibration and short cycling is gone which was my bigger worry.
