So I decided to open the trunk and take a look at the MM spark boxes and what did I find when i pulled the carpet up? Someone put down heat shield and then screwed down a fake wooden table top from from the 1980's over it. The funny thing is is that the carpet is form fit to the set up in there. So, what does the original configuration look like?

I have the same table top. Looks like off-white formica. I assume it is really supposed to be there.

Yeah. Take a look Matt. I know the us cars have a shallower trunk so maybe the factory added whatever was around to meet us regs. Not sure. Mine is wood grain.

What a trip. I'll have to take a look. Maybe they sneaked a folding camping table (like my CR-V's) in there :D

Or.....it's intended to be a cutting board for Parmigiano-Reggiano and Proscuitto, when I'm on the road. Is the carpet just tucked into the space, or are there fasteners?

I think i would cause more carpet fit problems if i removed it. Maybe it's best to leave it... whatever it is.

Also, the carpet seems to have never been removed as it is still glued at the top on the engine bay side and the hook for the tool rools is still riveted in.

And the metal fender liner is still in pristine condition under the spark box plate. Not a lick if rust which makes me happy.

Got the same table. So what's up with this? Maybe at that time it was the popular thing to do to reduce heat in the trunk space? Also, woodgrained.

How odd. So it's factory fit. I remember reading somewhere that our US trunks had to have extra heat protection which made them smaller than the euro cars trunks. Now we know what they added.

I feel better about it now.

To tell you the truth when I first found it I figured it was put in to cover some rust hole in the trunk and was afraid to look under it. Nice to know that it was an add-on with a purpose. Still needs to be verified.

try finding that in a WSM parts book. In 30 years restorers will be looking for period correct itailain imitation wood to win concours events.

I think that it's pretty cool that it's in there. One more of those signs that human beings had the greatest role in the construction of these cars, not robots.

That I like :) I'll have a look this weekend and will try to get a photo. We can compare table tops.

I had to chuckle... my '85 QV had the exact same table top. I was 99.9% sure that a PO had installed it for reasons beyond my comprehension. I actually threw mine out when I gutted the trunk. Had I known it was a concours piece, I would have kept it. :)

OK, it's safe to say that this is a confirmed factory piece and there may be variation in its color/type from wood grain to off white.

Or old desks from the factory. They did quite well on the 308 series $$ wise. Lol

IMHO, another fascinating part of the 3X8s' personality and lore. It would be fun to pull it out at some point to look for writing, penciled cut marks, etc. As I work my way through the entire car over the next few years, I'm looking forward to finding the crayon marks, numbers, etc. that others have found. This will all make for a nice photo album.

I was taking a guess on the off-white color. It's been a while since I looked. Could be wood grain. It looked heavy. Maybe 10-15 pounds, in the rear of the car, which really doesn't need the weight unlike the front.

I knew it was factory, without asking others, because the hole car seems put together this way. The only time I ever questioned the PO, was when I saw rock chips on the lower rear panels. It was red underneigh(my car is blue), so I thought someone had welded in a used panel(red being the most common color. Then one day I saw a factory picture of an unpainted car, and the lower rear panel is fiberglass primed in red. You red car owners have it lucky since rock chips would be near invisible!

Also came in black. Mine was delaminating. I think it is was an attempt to keep heat away from what ever is sitting on the bottom of the trunk. Mine has three wood strips that make an air pocket. It is held in place with two screws with snaps on top. The carpet matches the size of the wood and snaps to it. Air could circulate under the carpet... just a guess.

Will check mine out at the next time I am working in the trunk (antenna replacement). If it needs work perhaps there are better materials for insulating today then just the wood and air to rebuild it with? It would be nice to have a cooler trunk area. Perhaps just spraying some foam insulation between the layers. Thanks for the pictures!
