I found my old insurance card with my VIN of my first 308 back in 1991. Does anyone know of it's whereabouts:

    ZFFAA02A2C0040223 1982 308 GTSI Red/Beige

    Any clues would be great.

Wouldn't a carfax check at least tell you where she's registered?

I'll run the carfax. I have a few extra that I'm not going to use.

What all would a carfax really show?? I have had my car for almost three years, have no intention of selling it, but am curious about the history. So, if I had someone run a carfax would it tell me previous owners and such?? I have records back to 1998, but nothing before that.

It shows whatever gets reported by any agency. Could be as little as just registration/title events, or could be comprehensive service record. My GTR has a zillion entries for regular service because the dealership reports them in (so it shows oil changes, trans fluid changes, tire changes, etc)

If an accident is either reported to the police or a claim is filed, that should show as well.

Of course there are ways to 'wash' titles... The above is assuming no illegal shenanigans took place.

The carfax on my car showed a state of Colorado inspection every two years for a period of time. Not too much else, but from that I was able to see the car was driven about 2K miles per year for a long time, that was handy to know in the purchase decision.

Wow thanks guys. The 1991 is mine and I thiink the 1995 might be the buyer that I sold it to. He lived in Maryloand also. Maybe still has it?
Special thanks to GTHILL for running the Carfax. If I recall the guy that bought it was in the "garbage collection" industry or refuse if that is more PC. Might have been BFI or WasteRemoval something like that. Seemed to be a nice guy. I was of course in a kind of shock selling my baby for house furniture for the pending arrival of my second born. Anyway I came across the only record of the VIN on an old insurance card used as a placeholder in an old UNIX book. So now I had a way to try to find her.

I am old with little memory left, I didn't even remember that it was in 95 that I sold it much less to whom. I do remember that there was an issue with the milage. I had the face redone to 180mph from the 80mph and it came back and the odometer was intermittent or something. Anyway it only recorded about about 1 out of 7or 8 miles covered. I did explain this to the buyer but that is why it only shows ~2000 miles of use during my ownership. It was my DD. Most reliable car I ever owned....so far.

If it went out of the country would it still show on a Carfax?

My guess is he still has it. If it had been re-titled upon sale, that would likely show up -- as would an accident that totaled the car. On the other hand, if it suffered some mechanical failure that caused it to be parted out, I'm guessing carfax wouldn't know it.

Is CarFax the best way to trace a car's history?

Well he got a really sweet all original car with service records, proper maintenance the works. The only two items where a loose headliner material (after it was detailed and shampoo'd) and a wonky odometer/tripmeter. I sold it when the speculators got in the market and actually came out driving that car for the 4 years I had it for free. Including fuel, insurance, finance charges, service costs (one major) etc. I really loved that car. In fact when I first got the QV I was disapointed that it didn't have a Nardy steering wheel so I bought one with a hub to replace the MOMO. I have since come to my senses and had the Momo recovered. I like the thicker rim but still miss the engraved Nardi signature.

You can also perhaps email the folks at Ferrari Market Letter and see if they have any recent information on your serial number.

With regards to Carfax and AutoCheck and companies of the sort. Most of it is fairly accurate, but some of the car checks are as false as can be. For instance, years ago I put a BMW Isetta project car on ebay. The car had been off the road since 1964 and the ebay car VIN check said it had an accident in Dallas in 1994 and was red flagged on ebay.

It is a good start but you have to keep in mind if a car is in an accident and it is never reported to the police there will be no record of it so just because you get a carfax that states there are no recorded accidents for the vehicle dosen't mean it hasn't been damaged.

I don't think the accident histories are all that reliable, but it does seem like a pretty good way to check registration records and track down a long lost car-friend.

What is the feed to CarFax? I asked the NYC Police and they said they DO NOT share the accident report with CarFax, so I presumed it was the insurance companies that pushed the data to CarFax or to some intermediary database that CarFax and other similar services pull from.

    Good Morning to you sir

I just purchased your Ferrari. I typed in the Vin number to find out more about the car. I only found this forum and you asking about where the car is. Just wanted to let you know.
