I have been waffling for months (years actually) about buying a Ferrari....Caifornia, 430 Spider, Red, Titanium, New, Used...I can never decide.

Finally I got tired of the indecisiveness and bought a Rosso Corsa/Tan 2010 Cali. Build on this car was under $230k so it's lightly optioned with most of the good stuff (shields, Magneride, power Daytonas, 20" wheels, carbon/LEDs, iPod, yellow tach, red calipers, red stitching) - unfortunately no cruise control or mirrors or camera. I figured I could add those if I can't live without them. The car is in a truck and being delivered to me in a few hours.

But here's the interesting kicker: this Cali has only 217 miles on it. It comes out of the collection of a dude who has dozens of cars - including a Spyker, a GT3RS, an Aston Rapide, a Mercedes Black Series, & on & on --- and all these cars have virtually no miles on them. Apparently he doesn't drive? He just puts them in a garage and looks at them. (?)

I'm not sure I understand that philosophy. Can someone explain? Why own a bunch of amazing driver cars if you aren't going to drive them?

Anyway, his loss is my gain! I get a $30k discount off a virtually brand new car (minus 18 months of warranty I suppose). Now I intend to go put some miles on it!

    You = smart

    First owner = idiot!

Good for you! He just ate up a bunch of depreciation on this car for you.

Congrats. You just bought a car with free options. If you can swallow the new car price, it's great, for those of us that cannot, we are forced to buy cars with 200 miles on them ;).

Congrats! Be sure to post pics and driving impressions. Cars of this nature are very bad investments from a financial standpoint ... if not for driving pleasure, why buy them? A 2010 should have a few thousand miles on it by now ... you've got some work to do!

I didn't get the discount you got but I got to pay 15k off the build price for a 4 month old car. You did MUCH better. Enjoy it and drive the crap out of it. In already have 3k+ miles on mine and it's basically just a summer weekend car.

Great catch!!! Now drive the crap out of it and have the fun the other guy missed! Near perfect options, just missing cruise. It will be interesting to see if you can add that now.

Awesome buy! You said it had gone through 18 months of warranty. Does that make it a 2010 model?

Edit: i saw you mentioned that it is a 2010

This... I've known a few guys with that kind of money ($100M+) It's like collecting stamps for them... A few hundred miles is enough to get the thrill, then it's on to something else. Generally they have very little time and tend to live on airplanes and then, on the offtime, on a yacht. Driving themselves is something done rarely with a few stolen moments the way someone normal might catch a movie.

In any event, it's great there are guys like this or there would be far fewer cars available to buy used :)

Why so judgmental? Be tolerant, different folks, different strokes. Perhaps he appreciates the cars and gets his kicks in a different way than you, but that doesn't make him an idiot, does it?

Well, I don't like people who buy cars and then park them in their garage to waste away while there are others eager to drive them on waiting lists.

Spending 230K to drive it 150 miles and sell it for a ton of money less than you bought it is an idiot.

To you it is a waste, to others it isn't... I sympathize with driving them as well, as that is the joy I get out of my F'cars, but I don't see the need for being intolerant of other ways of enjoying these cars.

No, it's a total waste to the guy waiting a year to buy one. Sorry, garage queen owners get no sympathy from me.

If you don't want to drive it, let someone else who does buy it. Go collect paintings. They are just as pretty and probably you can sell them for more after you are bored with looking at them.

True, but not a total waste to the guy who enjoys sitting staring at it in his garage ;) What makes one appreciation more valid than the other - besides you saying so? Anyway, happy driving :)

For a person willing to buy a Smart car that was once owned by a celebrity for a few million dollars it may not be a waste to that person since he sees value in owning something that his favorite celebrity owned. However that doesn't mean his justification is as valid and reasonable as the justification to not to buy the vehicle at that price and for that purpose. Happy driving. And for the uncommon few, happy staring at your unused depreciating asset. :)

Nice pick up! Congrats on your first Ferrari.

Are you going to change the fluids et al before driving it?

I'm sure this guy's trophy wife is also happy he got rid of it.

Collecting things and letting them waste away is what is always is... waste.

Ferrari's are not art. They are cars. They do not increase in value if you hang them on the wall. The idea that they cannot be driven for some reason is the dumbest thing Americans do with their cars.

The sooner this idiotic trend disappears, the better.

But it, drive it, and then give it to another enthusiast when you're bored with it. Buying a car and sealing it away in your garage while it depreciates for 3 years is just dumb.

He may be happy but he is still dumb.

Follow Rick on this. He knows what the CA is good for-- driving.

We dont really know the previous owners story. With dozens of cars, we can assume he has a very large net worth. We dont know much else. Perhaps he is too busy to drive his cars, or he has so many he can only get to few or maybe he is even too old or disabled to drive but still loves cars. I wish he would donate a few of his cars for me or hire me as his auto warm up boy....

+1. There was a local 2007 Porsche GT3 with 400 miles on it. Car was just about to turn the 5 year mark (late '11). The owner has 15+ other cars, doesn't get to drive them much, leaving many with 3 digit odometers.

Everybody has their reasons. I only have a problem with those who don't drive it because they are afraid of miles and a scuff here and there :).

Great query - and something I pondered myself. Do oil, transmission fluids, etc. go bad if they sit unused? I didnt have the patience to wait to drive so i have put 75 miles on the car in 2 days, but have not changed the fluids yet. Should I do that? I know Ferrari recommends (requires?) changing fluids yearly regardless of mileage so I guess I'll do that unless it is unnecessary.

I'm also scratching my head about the break-in period prescribed by the owners manual. Seems like I still need to heed the 5500 rpm warning?

The factory takes them on the track right after building it. So why can't we? My 2012 saw 8K the first day, driving it home from the dealer, and saw 8K at least once a week, and 7K every day (except when the streets were covered with snow then I had to back off :D). Now I have had it five months and it still is full of oil. My 2010 had almost 30,000 miles when I sold it, and it saw 7K the first day, I was nice to it a couple days then said screw it and started having fun. I think you should too.
