You are of course correct, but I think its pretty typical for 'kids' to go through this stage.

Sounds a lot like "white people's problems". ;)

    I was 56 before I owned a Ferrari, but I didn't go to college.

last year I spent some time visiting 3rd world nations. I realized how good I have it just to have running water, electricity, AIR CONDITIONING, refrigerated food, medicine, public education. All of these are so easy to take for granted until you don't have them.

growing up in the US makes you numb to the what 90+% of the world is really like

and then you think, here you are, but you could have been born somewhere else, with little to no chance of improving anything about yourself or your family.

be grateful for the smallest things, and so much opportunity in your future

Yep. Get ready for a hopeless, wallet-emptying addiction. I've thought each one would be my last. Now casting my eyes about for #3.

    Definitely a whitefolks' issue.

I got a degree, but still had to wait until age 54.

So true. I've lived outside of the U.S. for over a decade now and I had no idea how naive I was until I got out and saw how the world lived beyond our shores. Visiting India for the first time on business when I first got here and seeing REAL poverty literally sent me into a state of shock. I almost couldn't process it all.

America today, even in the midst of our current challenges, is still a place of amazing potential and almost unlimited opportunity if you're willing to put your head down and work for it. With the educational opportunities available to almost anyone in this country, there is really no excuse.

I work with a great charity here that builds schools for children in poor, rural S.E. Asian countries with little access to educational opportunities. For me, improving access to a good education, not handouts, is key. Knowledge is the great leveler.

So getting back to the OP (whom I sense is long gone :)), deciding whether or not to go to med school is a pretty luxurious "problem" to have. If you're depressed or burned out, go get professional help. Otherwise give yourself a good smack and get refocused.

I would assume already being in med school, his intelligence is substantial, what I'm concerned about is his title thread having the word "hopeless" ..... If he is depressed, he does need to talk to someone, and get his life in order....basing his goals around owning a Ferrari is mis guided. I don't think he knows how much he has going for him , and waiting another 8 yrs to be in one of these cars , in his age bracket is about as successful you can be ....the only other option to get one sooner is if daddy gets you one.

Nah, there are plenty of ways to get into a Ferrari pretty quickly...real estate, hedge fund (that does well), shoe store, pizzeria, whatever. Problem is that he's fixated on a Ferrari as the ultimate goal. If you focus on building something up, a Ferrari, or anything else you want, is just a happy by-product. Frankly, a Ferrai (most are under $300k, right?), is a fairly low standard, especially in America. If that is the indicator of success, it's also an indicator of very misplaced priorities and thought processes.

And you, Zack, are a fine one to talk, seeing as how you haven't got your priorities set either.

To the OP...invest in yourself now and don't worry about measuring your value based on a car. Your dream might be to one day own a Ferrari but it can wait. You are young and barring something out of the norm you will have time to obtain your dream of Ferrari ownership.
