Just got pics of my car after detailling and yet again my eyes fall to the door wart...I fail to understand why this design continues on with ferrari & maserati particularly.
Why must they put a tatty old door lock slap bang on the door in this manner?..on the 458 its right on the body line too, surely its about time someone redesigned some better way of hiding this under the door handle or something.
Was the same on my 612, same on Massers etc, now dont flame me, I love this car, and its not a big issue, but just bring it up as a point along the way...

Beautiful car .. and yeh I get your point. I've previously wondered why they haven't offered a body coloured option.

You may want to consider the door lock plug that the some of the older Porsches had. My '97 C4S had one. It's basically a small, black plastic plug that fits into the door lock so it's less visible. You can probably still get one at a Porsche dealership. You may have to modify it some to get it to fit, but it shouldn't be too much trouble. They can also be painted. http://bumperplugs.com/products.html has them (second product down).

Anybody know which of the various red colors that these are available in, is closest to Rosso Corsa?

Not sure about the color, but I believe bumperplugs.com will paint it whatever color you want. Just be mindful that you may have to alter the plug's diameter so it fits into the Ferrari's keyhole inset. In that event, you may chip some of the paint. I put one in a different car years ago. I first trimmed the plug's diameter and its fitting tab to fit into the car's keyhole then painted it with touch-up paint.

One option, which we could easily do, is to make a totally invisible repair by removing the door lock, welding the hole shut and painting the repair area so no one would ever know anything was there.

Just great! I never even noticed this before, and now my eyes are immediately drawn to this detail. At least its only on the drivers side door...which I've never noticed before either. Thanks alot Chris! ;)

I've heard of bumperplugs but mostly for Porsches. Will need to look into it.

oh dear didnt mean to upset the OCD brigade!...
I dont think I would go with the weld option, also not really that bothered about it, dont think I would go with even a bumper plug.
Really my point was just to say I find it 'odd' that on such finely & beautifully designed motorcar they havent 'designed' around the need for such an eyesore slap bang in the middle of the door, surely it could be integrated under the flap you use to open the door or some sort of cable release from somewhere else. Even VW & the likes try to hide locks under badges and things...I mean I dont really understand the need anyway, cannot ever recall having to open a car door with a key!!

Nope never had a dead battery. Ever since Ive had F'cars/motorbikes etc I have had a garage, cars have always been on battery tenders in the garage when not in use.

Only thing I had a dead battery on was my sit on lawnmower, long cold Uk winter killed the battery couple of years back so now that sports a fly lead to an optimate too

But if you did have a dead battery, how do you get into a car with no manual locks? Hire Houdini? :)

You need a manual lock. How they do it is a subject of debate but to say that we will rely 100% on electrics for everything is not practical.

Agreed, yes I wasnt saying you dont need a manual lock somewhere, I was just answering the previous post.

Run a cable from the drivers door release mechanism to the front boot/luggage area through the door hinge area similar to the fuel cap release emergency thingy and put a key lock under the badge on the bonnet so you can get into that area, badge slides to the side to reveal the lock...job done

This makes me wonder about the MP4-12C. They don't even have a door handle. Wonder what happens with a dead battery? McLaren is a very technically competent company. I'm sure they have a solution - just don't know what it is. Any McLaren guys here?
